If they are junior / Senior is damn near impossible. Most of the time sophomores will be disgruntled if they believe they deserve playing time and freshman's i feel are 50/50, i've had some say HELL NO and i've had some say they would of redshirted themselves if they were the coach.

For freshmen, they seem to be more responsive if you have more players at their position. If you only have the freshmen and one other, your odds are slimmer that they'll accept.

I Generally try to RS a player on each of my teams every year. It has been my experience that you can RS the lowest rated Freshman at  their position or the lowest rated freshman on the team. Very unlikely for a Soph to accept.

Just finished my first season in HD and my team is poor at best but has one or two players that could be decent. I have 2 power forwards and a center that will all be seniors. However want to start my redshirt freshman at center next year and the senior C is a better fit at PF for my new style. Since I don't have any good offensive young PF right now I would like to change his position, redshirt him a season, and maybe start him next season. This would help me get better balance in my classes and maybe give me a chance to redshirt his replacement the following year...  Can you redshirt a senior if you move him to another position and there are 2 seniors ahead of him in that position? What are the chances he accepts?

A senior will almost always be unhappy. But I've redshirted seniors before. If he's maxed out in all the important categories, does it really matter if his WE drops to '1'???? I don't think so

The chances anyone other than a Freshman accepts a Red Shirt without a drop in WE is almost nil.

But for Seniors, you usually don't care about WE as they have usually already developed as much as they can anyway.  However, one thing to remember is that an upperclassman can just leave at the end of the Red Shirt year.

So, if you take a change and Red Shirt him, his WE is almost certainly going to go down .. and it is possible he transfers at the end of the year.  For some players, it could be worth that chance.  I mean, if you aren't going to win this year anyway, it might not matter much even if he leaves after the RS.

I wonder if the new change, where you can change the player's position, can affect the logic on determining if a player will RS. If you have a Freshman PG you would like to RS, I wonder if changing a couple of your upper class guards to PG beforehand would increase the chances of the RS being accepted without penalty.

seble said it does not .. but I am unsure.

I think the game engine calculates the positions it uses based on attributes, not what position is listed .. just like it does with early entries.
