1st draft questions... Topic

So I'm doing my first draft and i am having some questions about ranking 5 players. I have the 5th overall pick and just wanted some opinions. I only 14 mil in college scouting so not sure how accurate these projections will be though. Thanks in advance.

1) 18yr-2nd base- contact 57-power 95-VL 87 VR 88-eye 70
2) 18yr-RF- contact t68-power 87-VL 78 VR 69-eye 100
3 18yr-LF- contact 86-power 90-VL 62 VR 67-eye 77
4) 19yr-SP- Stamina 84-control 93- VL/VR 73.80-  p1/p2/p3/p4/p5  91/91/53/0/0
5)  22yr-SP- Stamina 82-control 90- VL/VR 73/90- p1/p2/p3/p4/p5  85/70/58/55/54

For me, number 5 is clearly the best. A starting pitcher with 90 vR, good control, and decent pitches? And throw in high stamina? I'll take him. That said, there are a few questions. I'd want to know what his current ratings are in order to see whether he can actually reach the projections. Don't post them here- otherwise other players in your league might see them and get a free scouting report - but take a look at where he is now, then go back to the draft history in your league and see how much progression other 22 year old high-drafted pitchers have made. You'll probably find that vR and vL can increase by about 15 points each for a 22 year old, but pitch 1 usually won't go up more than 10 or so. And durability and stamina won't go up much at all, so where he's at now is about where he'll end up.

The other player I like is the second baseman, but I definitely want to know more about his defense. Can he stay at second? If so, he's an elite player. Rank him second if he can. After that I'd put the other starter. If he had slightly better splits, he'd be an ace.

One more thing - you didn't pos the durability projection for the starter. As Long as its about 20 or more, no worries. If its close to 30, he's a true workhorse. But every once in a while you see a starter with durability of like 5 or 10. Those guys aren't very useful, at least not as starters.

I'm happy to give you advice, but need more information.  On your position players: handed, current RA/GL, speed, and base running

1) Lefty, 59/44,speed 49,base running 52
2)switch, 52/40, speed 63, base running 47
3)Lefty, 57/48, speed 73, base running 41

5 and 4 are run away winners IMHO you didnt say what your HS scouting was, so those projections may or may not be very accurate.  But those 2 pitchers Id be ecstatic if either one dropped to 5th overall.  Then Id go with 1,2,3.

both scoutings are 14 mil

1-3 are all corner outfielders.

5 is definitely the best.  4 is next.

Position players it's a total toss up.  I don't know which I like best.  Probably 1, 3, 2.

If all those are accurate it's a very solid top 5 players.

Just a couple red flags about number 4. First, his pitches are great, but he only has 3 of them. Three pitch starters can be inconsistent. Second, his splits look good, but I'd want to make very sure he can reach them, because if he misses them and ends up on the 68/72 range, he's not a top starter. I'd be fairly happy to get him at number 5, but I'd rather have the second baseman. He could hit .280 with a .350+ OBP and have a few 40+ homer seasons. If his defensive stats do indeed project at second base, he's a great player.

there isnt enough information for us to know how far along any of these guys will go.  14 scouting isnt very good.  its just ok.  Nor do we know their current ratings.  I was just giving advice if the players were to make their projections.  You are absolutely right 3 pitch pitchers are worse then 4 and 5 pitch pitchers all else being equal, but if this guy gets within 3 or 4 pts of all his projections he is going to be lights out.  Not quite as good as the #5 guy, but still a very very good #2 SP on a contender.

Agreed. More information could make a big difference.

What has helped me in my first 10 or so drafts is to go back at the draft history reports in my worlds for the last 10-12 years. I check out the top 5-10 draft picks from each year and look at their development. That way, you can see how many points a player is likely to add in each rating depending on how old he is at draft time. It also allows you to see how those ratings translate into performance if you look at their stats.
