16-0 in conference, no postseason Topic

I want to make it clear that I'm not making this post to *****, I just find it interesting.  My Montana State team went on a 21 game win streak, including 16-0 in conference play, but lost in the conference tournament finals.  I knew I had no chance at making the NT as an at large, but was hoping I could squeak in the PI (but didn't).  I'm just wondering how rare this is, as I've never seen it before.  Surely there can't be many teams that ran the table in conference but failed to make either postseason tournament.

Again, I'm not complaining about anything, I fully understand why I didn't make a postseason tournament with my schedule and didn't expect to based on my projection report rank (93).  Just a little quirk I wanted to share.

If you're asking how rare it is to go 16-0 and not make the postseason, it probably isn't that rare as your team did it 3 seasons ago under a different coach.

Off-topic but you can help prevent this by not scheduling so many SIMS. 10 SIMS next season is not the way to go.

Your SOS was pretty awful, I had a similar season to yours with a SOS around 150 and i was 26-4 and didn't break top 40 in RPI and luckily I won my conference tournament otherwise I may have not made it too the NT. I did however make the PT as a 8th seed with a projection report of 96 once. I had a decent SOS and finished just under 20 wins. Once you get to 80+ it seems to wiegh more heavy on your SOS and who you've beaten. In perspective I believe I read somewhere that the top 50 or 40 are the only ones that typically make the NT, After that its all fighting for a PT spot... So 93 is tough and you have to really have had some upsets which was impossible with your SOS

Its the way to go when I'm losing 5 seniors and just trying to max out my wins to bump up prestige.

Pickup a JUCO or 2 and try to spread class around, I'm working through the same issue at my Northwood team right now, I lost a 4 yr starter and a 3 yr starter and my best player on my team all in 1 season. Whiffed on the JUCO I wanted but was able to use my redshirt to potentially balance. In the end I'm expecting a downyear but I'm gearing to never have that issue again.

Lunardi has two National titles in only 15 total seasons. I'd say he has a pretty good handle on the game.

FWIW, even though the same 16-0 scenario happened only a couple of seasons earlier with the same team, I'd still guess it's fairly uncommon.

Had a 16-0 season not too long ago. Didn't make the PIT or NT. It was a bit of a shock. Went from having a great season to WTF just happened here. However, in reality, if you had looked at the nonconference results, that team probably wasn't worthy of a postseason bid.

ties in to your other thread as well.

schedule strength is god in this game, so human stacked conferences with good teams have a highly advantageous feedback loop compared to conferences like the one your 16-0 teams was in (or my team this season).

If you're not in a strong conference, you need to do two things every season you think you might be good enough to go to the postseason. Schedule as many humans with good teams as you can in the non conf (easier said than done, by the way, and this is a weakness in this game's architecture) and make sure you win your tourney.

You can still get a decent SOS against sims. Research which sim teams will have 5 or more seniors. They will play better than an average sim team. Also, find good conferences and play their best sim teams. Their SOS will improve in the conference season and will help you. This is what you have to do sometimes if you start with a team that has low prestige and higher teams won't play you.

 Guilford was 17-10 with a 15-1 conference record, a 64 RPI and a 58 SOS and did not get into the Postseason Invitational last year in D 3.
