Leagues - When to Bail? Topic

We stay in some because we're winning... the minors are stacked... like the people... the rules... we all have our reasons. My question is... how long do you stay? Do you bunker down for 5/10/20 seasons... win a few... take your lumps, reload... and try to win again? Or do you leave on a high and move on?

Side note... with some of these hard-to-fill leagues, what's the etiquette on NOT reupping? I know the courteous thing is to do it early and/or let the commish know you're leaving... but even after reupping... if it takes 30, 45, 60 days to fill... I'm starting to think you're either in the wrong league or you probably need another commish?

Just curious to hear some thoughts on both points.

Thanks,

I never leave just because my team is in a down cycle but honestly you leave when you are no longer enjoying the league and that is different in each situation and for each person.

I always try and give as much notice as possible (you can always change your mind)

I haven't left one because it wasn't filling but I'm pretty patient that way, and have not been in a situation where it lasted months, so I can't really answer when to bail.

I stay in worlds as long as I enjoy them.  Then, when I stop enjoying them, I stay until I can leave my team in a good situation.  I know one won the next WS and I think all have made the playoffs(long term worlds, I've left a few after one season).    Leaving a pile of crap is a chump move.

As for the hard to fill worlds, you probably know it long before it becomes one.   I don't think I'd wait two months if I wanted to play.   Waiting is not that big of a deal if you have multiple teams.   That said, I'm not in slow-filling worlds so my knowledge on them is limited.

I've only been playing for a year, so I'm not sure what my advice is worth, but I figure as long as you leave your team in decent shape (not maxed out in payroll and/or devoid of talent), you're okay to walk away.

I'm in a world that isn't very good or very competitive, and it took almost two months to fill last time. Worse, one of the owners in my division is winning 110+ games per season now because he tanked for 5 seasons to collect superstars. But I'm not leaving it until I clean up the mess I made. It was my first team, and in my first season I made some stupid free agent deals that won't expire until after next season. I figure I owe it to the other owner to leave a team that isn't a complete trainwreck. I agree with Mike that its kind of a jerk move to leave a mess for the next owner.

I leave when i no longer enjoy the world, rule changes, or taking too long to fill.   Quality worlds fill quickly, have commishes that are proactive in keeping there world filled, not waiting till the last minute to figure out that they have openings.

I leave when Lesliechow/Caracarn joins the world.

Funny enough, an experiment I'm trying to do with a private league rule has locked down what I need to enjoy a league
  • Proactive commissioner. #1. The league is advertised and existing league owners are polled for returnees at league expansion. I've been looking at existing leagues with a large number of openings, and quite a few (not all) have a commish that all but ignore the league in terms of advertising and informing their owners.
  • Competitive balance. Rules that encourage that balance, and owners that use the veto when necessary. Doesn't have to be every team at 81-81, but every league....EVERY LEAGUE...that has those 8+ openings also has the 1-2 owners that haven't seen south of 100 wins in 10+ seasons.
  • Rules are rules. No wavering. No exceptions.
