If I promised to redshirt a guy when I recruited him and then decide not to redshirt him will that have a negative impact?

You can add the redshirt at any time it's possible this season (before he plays in a game this season) and he'll take it willingly (without any work ethic drop) since you informed him of it.

You cannot, however, add it to him in any subsequent season - the inform only works for this season.
