Cutting players Topic

I just took over Yale in Knight, and their roster is atrocious. I loose 6 guys 4 Sr's and 2 walkons so I will have max scholarship money. I am going to keep the 2 Jr's will be Sr's and the SF and he is not good but also might be better than having to recruit 10 guys on 6 scholarships.

So I guess the question is what kind of hit am I going to take by cutting 3 guys, and does it even matter? Is it better to get rid of them now and not worry about it?

I don't think there's a penalty if you cut a player  that you didn't recruit.  I'm not sure about multiple players

recruiting 10 with 6 paid is hard at Div-1 ... BUT .. if you carry over some Walkons this time, you will get recruiting cash for them next season.

I don't think the penalty for cutting SIM recruited guys will be too high (if any at all) .. but 3 is a lot at one time and I have not done it.

remember you can only recruit 6 freshmen in one class, so if you try to fill 10, that will be 4 JUCO/transfers required.

It does not even matter.  Savage that roster.  You're exactly right that you have to keep the rising seniors and the best remaining player.  The AD will prevent you from cutting below 3.

The bigger question is whether you intend to run a press still.  If so, then it might get tough to sign 8 or 9 players worth signing on that budget (and with that prestige).

I would cut at least the 2 freshmen.  That would give you 8 spots this year and I would try to fill 4 of them.  Then you try to fill 4 next year.  I would seriously consider moving to m2m or zone defense.  basically, plan on being really bad this year - you are already at a disadvantage being D- prestige, nearly no post season cash, so don't over extend the recruiting budget by trying to fill too many spots by reaching for players that basically no one else wants.  unless you hope to move quick, it may take a few seasons to get them up to speed.

There is no penalty for sure. I did the same in IUPUI, kept my reputation intact.

I agree. burn that roster to the ground. it will only help you.

one strategy i've used in this kind of situation with mass schollies in a big rebuild is grabbing a borderline D1/D2 jr college player or two...they're cheap, if they have high WE they'll gain 80+ in a season, they'll be superior to what you had there, and they'll only be around 2 seasons so you're not handcuffing yourself to a subpar player for 4 years. and of course, what others said, take walk-ons, etc.

I would cut them all but the would be SR's and the 83 PER Fr......He'll atleast be able to come off the bench against bad teams and score a bit........you should be able to recruit 9 players with 90k.   You can sign 2 or 3 for $110 and try to land 1 or 2 "decent" players with your other money......I would be afraid to literally scout every state, you probably aren't going to win any battles so look for diamonds in the rough and try to get them for $110......also hit the ineligibles, internationals, and the after signing leftovers.

Not true. It is random. I once cut 2 players upon accepting a new job at Dartmouth & the one good player I inherited quit in protest, transferring to UNC, and laying waste to my reputation.

Oh. Sorry allblack. I was describing a 2-player cut.

I've taken reputation hits multiple times for cutting sim players in year 1 of a rebuild.  But it does seem random.  Worst hit I took was down to A- rep after cutting 3 guys.

Thanks everyone for the insight. Long road ahead of me. Good thought about the defense.
