Playing a good 2B at SS Topic

I am in a progressive league and have found myself with 2 good hitting 2B's (both without any secondary positions) and a decent fielding but horrible hitting (and never walking) SS. All other positions were filled with pretty good or real good hitters. The season is almost over, so this is more of a "did I do it right" question rather than a "what should I do" one. Here are the particulars.......

SS is Virgil Stallcup 1951,(real life) 241/251/346, B/D+

2B is Nellie Fox 1951, (real life) 313/372/425, B/A

Thru 139 games, Virgil is 216/218/286 and Nellie is 300/345/385. Defensively, Virgil's stats are .979 with a 5.99 RF. Nellie at SS is .895 with a 5.15 RF. Virgil has 0 + plays and 5 minus plays (in approx. 500 innings at SS). Nellie has 0 + plays and 9 minus plays (in approx. 725 innings at SS).

My question is simply would you have played Virgil at SS and wasted a good hitting 2B on the bench or would you have opted for better offense and a weaker option at SS (I set defensive replacement settings to bring Virgil in late with a lead to replace Nellie). My team is currently 74-65 and in 2nd place, for whatever that might be worth......

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

ive had to use the venerable frank white at $$ for a few seasons in a prog league..last season he was an A-/ B+ second baseman...in 139 games he had 50 errors and 11 bad plays..no good plays. so I guess he played like a D+/D+ shortstop..if he was an average second baseman probably 75 errors...both seasons played out similarly..

Looks like fox should get on base something 70 more times than Virgil.....the defense lost isn't 70 runners per game....note I've had a few cocktails and did the math in my head....

Trade your other 2B for a SS...

Barring that, if using defensive replacements when up by 1-run in the 7th inning, then I'd consider it, but it's certainly not ideal.  Look at your pitching staff and see what the differential between ER and R is. Then look at the differential of RS/RBI for Stallcup and Fox. I'd imagine that that info will let you know if this is a good idea or not.

I don't like using players out of position. The only exception is first base, which it seems you can stick any player there and it doesn't seem to matter. In fact, for OLs I'll not draft a first baseman and just use my best hitting AAA players at the position.
