The "We Drafted WHO?!?" League Topic

As a Hornets fan, the draft is always a disappointment. As I watched my beloved Hornets pass on Justise Winslow for Big Frank this week, I couldn't help but think of all the times they've just missed a player (or passed up a player) that was a franchise changer.

Let's run a league where your entire team must consist of players that went 1 or 2 spots before or 1 or 2 spots after your team drafted (any round any season). If your team drafted 3rd, you can take the 1st, 2nd, 4th or 5th player selected and add them to your team. The player selected must be within two spots of your team's draft position. We can always say, what might have been.

* You may also have players on your roster that your team drafted and traded before they played a game. (ie, Kobe, Vince Carter, Dirk).

*You may only take one player per pick you're using. Let's say you are the Pistons who picked 2nd in 2003. As the Pistons, you can't take Lebron AND Carmelo.

* Territorial picks do not count as draft picks - therefore, no one will be rolling with Wilt teams. Oscar Robertson is the only exception to this. Oscar may be chosen by the Lakers or Knicks franchises.

I'm a masochist, so I will take the Hornets.

As a Timberwolves fan, I have to join.

Can you select players your team drafted, then traded away that night?

Or what about picks your team would have been able to make had they not been busted for trying to cheat the system to sign Joe Smith?  (yeah, all that for him)

Fascinating.  I'll play with this concept in the draft center and get back to you.  I could run with either the Nuggets or Timberwolves.  Are franchises exclusive?  (This may be harder to fill if so...)

I didn't really consider players who teams traded on draft day. Mostly because for that one moment, I was pumped that we drafted Kobe. Haha. In other words the heartbreak wasn't immediate. I could be swayed to allow this though as I do t want to put too many rules on it.

Brad- ideally franchises would be exclusive, but you make a good point about seeing it fill. If it's not getting interest with exclusivity, I'm happy to change that.

Okay.  Well, pencil me in with the Nuggets for now.  But it could be difficult to make that franchise work without the ability to use players drafted but traded away immediately.  I'll keep tinkering.

Is this all time? And is it one guy per year? Like if I take Milwaukee, can I get hill and Kidd?

I think all time is fine.

Also, in keeping with the spirit of the theme, I'd say lets go with one player per draft pick. Because even if Hill and Kidd both fell, you could not take both. So not one player per year, but one per draft pick. Make sense?

Let's say yes. You can take players that were traded ON DRAFT NIGHT only.

This should add a few players to everyone's options.

Can only one person take a specific team?  Copernicus took my Bulls.  If I can take them too, sitemail me.  If not, I guess I'm out.

For now, I am hoping for exclusivity, but if we have to change that, I will sitemail you for sure.

As a long suffering Knicks fan how can I pass this up?

BF I've been looking for a reason to come back to WiS. I'll take the infamous Portland Trailblazers. Was hoping to get MJ and Hakeem, but Oh Well.

As far as exclusive. What if you allowed 2 teas per franchise and just put them in different conferences?

And Durant. Portland's misses are ridiculous.
