OK, here is an easy one... if you trade a player during the season, is his salary pro-rated based on the number of games he played with you?  Example: if I trade a player after 40 games, I would pay approximately 1/4 of his salary.  Is this correct?

Yes. The player-selection screen shows salary and prorated salary. The trade-summary screen shows prorated salary — the amount the player's new owner is responsible for.
