If a coach runs out of recruiting money but has offers out, is there any way they will commit despite not yet considering the school? In other words, can a team sign an undecided recruit without any further recruiting effort if they at least have the offer out to the recruit?

technically yes but realistically probably not.

the way its a technically yes goes like this: a player's considering threshold and signing threshold goes down over time. say they need 1000 points to consider you at the start of recruiting - by the end, it may be 700. so if you put in 800 and ran out, its possible the guy would start considering you and sign in the end.

the reason i say realistically probably not is because the considering and signing thresholds are so small (they are so close to each other many don't even realize they are different), and the reduction is a % of that, and therefore, very small as well. how much effort is in? if you did like 1 hv + scholarship and it happens to be one of those guys where that wasn't enough up front, then maybe he will sign eventually. if you are talking two dozen phone calls or similar, then probably that will never happen, even though the gap between the two scenarios is almost nothing. the numbers are just so small the kind of stuff you are describing almost never happens - but it can, and does on occasion.

That makes sense. I was curious as to how drastic the expectations change, and in essence if the recruit isn't considering anyone by the end but will pick from his available options at the end. I was hoping to catch someone with the "$110 special" but all of my promises are getting rejected by guys that aren't yet considering me so I don't think it's going to happen.

Update: The $110 special worked anyway, go figure.

it almost always works from the beginning.... most likely the reason it didn't work on some guys is because they were rejecting the start, not because the start wasn't enough effort. i believe in d2 and d3 any guy you can talk to will take the 110, i think its only d1 where some guys need more.

The signing threshold drops roughly 40% by the end of the recruiting.  I don't know if it is steady or there is a huge drop at the very end but I have signed guys for less than 20 calls and 20 letters at the end.

I am also not sure about guys who drop down, their threshold is calculated differently (albeit slightly) I think.
