I started this thread so people can discuss their strategy and post their rosters.

I will start us off...

Coming into the draft, I wanted to load up on quality SP's with the first 2-3 picks, preferably from teams that don't have many good options.  With the #2 overall pick, I just wanted the best SP available regardless of team.  I assumed I'd get either Koufax or Gibson (whichever one wasn't taken at #1).  When both were available, I had a tough choice.  I went with Koufax because he has 3-4 solid years to choose from if I get stuck.  In retrospect I should've taken Gibson... Phil Regan was hanging around forever and I couldn't take him.  With my two picks in rounds 2-3, I was planning on Randy Jones (SD) and Mike Caldwell (MIL), but Jones went right in front of me, so I went with Tanana instead.  I also knocked off a couple of tough seasons (76, 78).  That's 919 IP of sub 0.96 whip. 

Next, I went after hitters, focusing on position scarcity first, grabbing SS Tony Harrah (Tex) and C Gary Carter (Mon). I became worried that I was going to have too many right-handed hitters so at the net turn, I went with Ken Singleton (Bal) and Darrell Evans (Atl).  The one position I wanted to fill next round was 2B and I was happy to get Tom Herr (StL).  I was hoping to grab John Mayberry also, but he got picked 5 picks ahead of me.

Then I made a critical mistake.  I wanted to take and should have taken Toronto's Lloyd Moseby but thought he might last another round.  Instead I took RP stud Steve Ontiveros (Oak).  The next day, I realized that I was using 1985 for both Herr and Ontiveros.  To avoid the penalty, I had to switch Herr to his partial 1983 season (.403 obp) and platoon him which added some complexity to my drafting process.  Of course, Moseby lasted another 39 picks before going 6 picks in front of me.  I ended up not taking anybody from Toronto.

So far, I have 3 solid SP's and can grab a 100-IP fourth SP later.  My offense includes C, 2B, 3B, SS, OF.  There are plenty of options at 1B and OF, so it's time to load up on the bullpen.  I grab Bob Locker (ChW) and Hal Woodeshick (Hou) with my next two picks.  That's 210 innings of 1.02 whip to go along with Ontiveros 75 IPs of 0.86 whip.  Next round, I was looking at Cepeda but he got snagged 9 spots in front of me.  Then I found the perfect hitting option to keep maximum flexibility - Von Hayes (1B & OF).  On the turn, I didn't need another stud RP, but I couldn't pass up Bill Henry - Reds (52 IP, 0.83 whip).

At this point, I started to map out the rest of my team and started to look at the tough franchises that I still needed to draft (SD, Sea, KC, Tor).  I also noticed that many of those 100-130 SP's started to get drafted.  I mapped out Richie Scheinblum (OF, KC), Rod Craig (PH, Sea) and Broderick Perkins (OF, SD).  I just had to figure out when to take these guys.  I took Perkins first since I knew I'd need 111 PA to platoon with Scheinblum's 545 PA.  I knew I could wait on Scheinblum since every team that needed an OF already had either 1972 or KC (yes, I was tracking every team's picks).  I got nervious about the 100-IP SP's left so I grabbed Rudy May (NYY, 1.08 whip).  

On the next wraparound (rounds 16-17), I grabbed Herr's platoon partner (Bob Johnson, NYM .348 avg in 250 PA).  Then I realized that I had to take Scheinblum because he has some sub 300K seasons that somebody might take.  I like his value - $3.6M for 545 PA of .383 obp and a switch-hitter!  At this point, I figured out the rest of my team.  And Chili Davis was part of that team, until ozomatli grabbed him 3 picks in front of me.  Now, I had a list of about 10 guys I could play at 1B or OF, some full-time, some platoon.  The teams in play were Red Sox, Cubs, Tigers, Indians, Giants.  Since I wasn't sure if I was going to go full-time or platoon, I grabbed Carl Taylor (PIT), who had 2 cheap seasons (that I still needed) and one stud platoon season (261 PA, 348 avg, .432 obp).   I also grabbed my Mariner and solid PH, Rod Craig (.385 avg).

The next turn (rounds 20-21), I wanted to delay my decision on who my last starting batter would be until I could lock up some cheap scrubs.  I went through every year I had left and figured out which teams had the fewest 200K choices.  I quickly grabbed 200K guys Lenny Faedo (MIN) and Russ Nagelson (Det or Cle).  The next turn is where I had to finally commit on a strategy.  I needed a starting 1B or OF and a $1.5 to $2.0 M reliever, plus two cheap scrubs.  I went with the scrubs... Mike Ivie (SF) & Russ Nixon (Bos).  So I finally decided on a platoon at 1B with Joe Pepitone, who's easily my weakest batter (.307, .347, 482), but it allows me to use Taylor's stud year for 40% of the season.  And I had enough salary to grab my last RP (Terry Fox and his 1.10 whip).

I haven't selected my ballpark yet, but it's not a big concern.  I have decent power on offense, (170 HRs) but my pitchers also give up some HRs (0.52 HR/9).  So anything between -1 and +1 on HRs is acceptable.  Plenty of choices left.

Schwarze, the only guy that I had "snatched" from me right before I took him was Darrell Evans. I thought he'd be a great (and economical) #5 hitter behind Frank Robinson and Fred Lynn. Then you grabbed him, so I ended up taking Jim Hickman.

During my preparation for the draft, what was clear to me was that the most easily exploitable advantage in this era was HRs. With a relatively low amount of decent (< 0.4 HR/9#) pitching in this era, along with a large amount of HR hitters, and (perhaps most importantly) the fact that I was willing to bet more people would be looking for the switch hitting speedy players (given the 100M cap), it was clear to me which direction I wanted to go in. Despite not being +3/+3 for HRs like some other parks, I wanted to use Sicks' due to it's dampening of both singles and triples, which makes it the most power hitter friendly park available (in my opinion). I knew I would really only need one OF with "decent" range and fielding but, given the focus on HRs, didn't pay much attention to defense outside of there, SS, C, and 2B.

When I got the fifth pick I was happy because I thought it would allow me to grab Mike Scott or Don Sutton. When Gibson fell to me, I was shocked. Despite the prevalence of good Cardinals in this time period, Gibson is far and away the most valuable player in the draft pool, considering my HR friendly strategy. I couldn't pass him up. After that, I focused on the two positions I thought were most critical. I didn't think Petrocelli would make it back to me but, again, I was happily mistaken. He's really the only SS in the draft I was interested in. If I didn't have him I would've taken a SS 5 rounds later than I did. Despite Torre being my #1 catcher available, the flexibility he offers was dampened because I already had my Cardinal. I may have gone another route here if I had a do-over, because having to use him as a Brave stopped me from grabbing the 2B I wanted (Davey Johnson) later in the draft.

I grabbed Reggie Smith due to the fact that he's a switch hitter with great OBP and HR power, then got Quisenberry (though I wanted Sutter but couldn't have him due to Smith) because I knew I needed one of the top relievers just like I got the top SP (later, I'd use this same logic to take Cisco Carlos). Grabbed Grich for his flexibility with years and teams, and almost took Gullickson in Round 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11, but kept holding off due to '81 being Grich's best year. Eventually, I couldn't pass up on him anymore and took him in Round 12, as a true steal due to his incredible HR/9. During that time, I grabbed Bernie Carbo for his incredible partial season (partial season players are often overlooked in drafts like these, but we have a lot of good owners and I didn't want to take the chance). Once calhoop took a stadium, I wanted to grab mine just to be sure I got it.

Then, Champ Summers great AB/HR sold me on his 1979 season, so there was that pick, and my final SP in Dave Roberts (a lefty, but with good HR/9). I should also mention that I probably grabbed Jesse Barfield too early, but was really the only Blue Jay / Mariner I wanted who could play every day, plus his fielding / range fulfilled a pre-draft goal for me.

I grabbed Karl Best, even though I already had my Mariner / Blue Jay, in Round 15 just to make it that much more difficult for everyone else to find a quality Mariner / Blue Jay, and Rich Rollins seemed like the best 3B left available to me. I had a choice between Chili Davis + Joe Sambito + one season of Grich and Mike Easler + a different Grich, ultimately going with the first package due to the lack of quality RP left open to me, and then grabbed Easler later as a 200K scrub just so no one else could use his good season. I didn't run into any salary issues due to good planning and looking ahead from Round 15 or so on.

I ran into very little trouble with the years/franchises soup requirement, just by dumb luck. I don't think I even paid attention to what team/year the player I wanted was from (as long as they weren't from a team or year I already had) for the entire draft. I was definitely expecting this draft to be a lot more challenging than it ended up being for me. Very few people took the players I had targeted (nhsteven and, strangely considering his stadium choice, calhoop being the main culprits). Running this draft was very time consuming but it was also a lot of fun. I'm very much looking forward to the league and feel my team will compete well.

schwarze, I almost took Scheinblum right before you, but for his 1973 season not 1972. That round determined a lot for me, ended up taking Sambito and all who followed.

ok I rarely ever flaunt my stupidity by sharing my moronic strategies after the election process usually because they have either morphed into something unrecognizable or they were not that solid to begin with. However, in this instance, the ideas I had in my head actually played out and I can see how far fetched they were or not.

I knew as soon as the lottery was drawn, I was screwed. Picking 14th is just about as bad as it gets. I knew I wouldn't get any of the top pitchers but figured that everybody would be so fixated on getting studs that maybe I could get good O at reasonable value. I knew I was going to have to go with a D and speed team. Getting Morgan and the Wiz were key. Getting a speedy CF and stud arm catcher at a reasonable price were also priorities. This would leave me $ to spend at the end of the draft to cherry pick good guys when no one else could afford them.

My first real mistake came in selecting Larry Hisle. i forgot I already had Pasqual as my Twin so I had to take Hisle's lowly Brewer season which I guess in hindsight was inevitable. I kind of realized that my last 5-6 guys were going to suck. I just took a suckwad player a couple of rounds earlier. Second trouble spot came when I realized the years I had left didn't necessarily jive with the franchises I needed. Ergo the Padres pick. Finally the thing I am most proud about is that I left myself with the 1965 Mets as my last pick. This was a team/year that had more low cost stiffs than anyone to finish out my roster. no problemo.

I have good D, plenty of speed, good arm at C. and reasonable pitching. I had to move on Busch Stadium after the Astrodome was snatched out in front of me. I have the IP but need to keep the HR/IP down. Picking 14th, finishing anywhere above .500 will be a miracle but it will be fun. btw count me out at a $70mil cap.

My goal was to grab 3 big inning starters right way (900IP or so) and then 6 or 7 hitters.  I had determined I didn't need to spend much over $6M on any hitter and saw that there was a bounty at this price. I was surprised to see so many hitters going early (mostly big $$ hitters though that I was avoiding) which left a decent wealth of pitching out there through the first 4 rounds.  

When Denny McLain was still on the board in round 3, my course was set:  Municipal Stadium.  Low OAV pitchers.  Big Range doubles and triples hitters to grab in rounds 5-15.  When round 4 came around and I was prepared to start filling in my lineup, I saw Righetti still on the board.  I figured he could spot start in place of McLain when we travel to a HR park; McLain will get his lion's share of his IP at home.  

Beginning in round 5, I started drafting up the middle (2B/SS/C).  I waited on OF because there was still plenty of the type of player I wanted out there (range and 2B/3B). Grabbed Mayberry for 1B (sorry schwarze) and then one of my favorite WIS closers of the era in Dale Murray.  Time to fill in the OF:  Maddox, Bostock, and Blair were my goal, though I nervously waited on Blair for a few extra rounds while I grabbed a solid 3B in Boyer, a LH setup in Mingori, and a great innings eater in Buzhardt from a tough year (63).  When Blair (he'll give me >25 + plays) was still there in round 16, my team was essentially done.  

I didn't take any chances putting together a platoon - all my guys so far were 600+ PA  (save Maddox).  From then on a few PH, a few more serviceable IP, that's it.

My pen is pretty HR proof for late innings in road games (400+ IP with .18 HR/9).  My biggest problem is a less than awesome OBP in my lineup.  I'm hoping Municipal and my range will help offset my lack of walks.

With the 1st pick, I passed on Gibson and Koufax as I was concerned they would eat up too much of the $100MM cap.  MY WHIP artificially high due to picking a crappy Mike Corkins as my Padre.  He will pitch only in mopup or not at all.

This is a really interesting league concept and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Like many others, I wanted stud pitchers in the first two (or even three) rounds.  Mike Scott was a no-brainer at #6 bc his '86 is fantastic and the Astros are a harder to fill team.  Fritz Peterson was the best on the board coming back.  Almost took Hank Aguirre for his strong '62 in the 3rd but was able to get him in Round 5 after snagging my stud catcher (Bench) and 2B (Ryno in the 4th round!).  Seemed pretty clear that I was going to have a HR heavy team so I geared the next few hitters that way (Dewey, Carty, Larry Parrish) and planned to take Tiger Stadium.  Added Templeton as my SS after the top tier guys were off the board and then was able to snag a slew of 100 IP guys with great WHIPS (DeLeon--also a Padre, Regan, Bill Dailey, Bob Reynolds) so I'll use some combination as my 4th starter.  Needed some power platoon guys to fill my 3rd OF and 1B slots and Al Woods (also a Blue Jay) and Aikens fit the bill.  By then, I was into the mid-90s in salary (and had a pretty inflexible team) so I just started grabbing cheap fill-in guys and slid under the cap with 30K to spare (like tridentic, I also had the 65 Mets last).  Didn't have any issues with guys getting stolen and I felt like I got some guys (Aguirre, Ryno, Templeton) later than expected.

My numbers don't seem as good as others as of yet so we'll hope to break .500.

After I took Guidry with my first pick life got in the way as I was travelling for Thanksgiving and ended up with Bronchitus.  A big thankyou to the commish for making my proxy picks for the next few rounds.  Making a proxy pick can be tricky when you have to have about fifteen different guys available depending on what happens.  But it seemed to work out fairly well.   4 of my first five picks were starting pitchers.  78 Guidry, 63 Ellsworth, 69 Messersmith, and 85 Reuschel.  Given that I got that much value on pitching I needed to have as much range as I could get on defense.  I have A+ and A in the outfield.  I have A+, B+, A-, and A- in the infield.  My catcher's arm is A.  But I left my bullpen until the late teen picks.  It is Ok but not great.   Actually my offense is pretty solid.  Went with Memorial Stadium.  Slight advantage as a pitchers park.

My strategy was to target Dodger stadium and draft hitters with high AVE and HR, and pitchers with low HR/9. Got the stadium and some good pitchers, but they mostly give up a few more HR than I wanted, and in the middle of my draft I forgot about my HR hitter plan and ended up with only two and a half HR hitters. Hope that doesn't come back to haunt me.

I was not happy to get the 20th draft slot, but I was pleased to find Horlen available there, so all is forgiven. Got Ryan in the wraparound, who gave up the same number of HR as Addie Joss, so I am happy with my #1 and #2 pitchers. Mays is a great player to build an offense around, but I wish I would have done better building it. I inexplicably picked Keith Hernandez over Don Mattingly, who was comparable but had a lot more HR. Completely forgot my strategy. Then at least three times I wanted to draft someone only to see that he was a Cardinal and I already have Hernandez. At least I got to pick a power hitting platoon player in Pasqua later. Funny, I also planned on taking a 1B late because it was a deep position but I forgot that too, getting Hernandez before the key infield positions. Now I am left with Belanger at SS and Cookie stinkin' Rojas at C. But at least he was a bargain.

Overall, if my pitching is good enough I should compete, but I fear I will not have enough power to score the runs I will need to be a winner.
