Do I understand the "steal" correctly? If another player chooses one of my unprotected players, they get to use him 5 times, and I can't use them at all?
That is correct.

I have a couple of different questions about the steal...
Let's say Team A drafts A's OF, Team B drafts Yankees OF, and Team C drafts Padres OF. Team D steals "Ricky Henderson - A's."
1) I get that the Team A (A's OF) can't use Ricky, But what about Team B (Yankees OF) or Team C (Padres OF)?
2) And can Team D use any Ricky Henderson seasons, or are they limited to the seasons in which he played for the A's?
Sorry if I'm making things more complicated than they have to be.
Good questions. They are clarified in the rules but I will answer them here for you.
1) When you steal a player you must indicate the player and franchise from which you will be using him and you will be limited to that franchise's version of Rickey Henderson.
2) If Rickey Henderson - A's were stolen by Team D then Team B who drafted the Yankees OF could use '85 Ricky without a conflict, etc.
Good questions from schwarze:
Q: I don't see a years restriction. So I assume for NL teams, we can select players from the pre 1900's franchise.
I.e., Silver King is part of the St. Louis Cardinals franchise.
Correct?
A: That is correct. As long as you can trace the player to a current active franchise as per baseball-reference you may use him. Silver King played for the original Browns who were a precursor to the present day Cardinals so he would qualify.
Q: I see the draft is 10 rounds...
so that means
C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, SP, RP & Wildcard take up 9 of the 10 drafting slots.
Can the 10th selection be any position?
A: Ballpark is the 10th. So if you pick Cardinals ballparks you could choose from Busch I, II, Robison, and Sportsman Park. They will be exclusive to your team for the 5 seasons.
Can we take more than one position from a franchise? In other words, if I was dumb, could I take the Rays SP and later the Rays 3B?
A: Yes
Question.
Do we have to take every position? It's possible that I could find 5 guys with 1B eligibility among my OF's?
A: Yes.

Can someone use another player's protected player if he qualifies in another position? If, for instance, Honus Wagner was not a wild card draft pick but rather protected by the Pirates SS owner, could I still use him in the OF?
A: Yes you may use Wagner if you drafted Pirates OF for one season. Going forward (meaning not this version) I may ask those who select the wildcard player to declare the 5 seasons they are using up front as a means of protecting player from being used my other teams for one season.

I would expect the answer to be "yes, you can use him as an OF". This is related to the Lou Boudreau scenario shown in the rules. I have this situation with Frankie Frisch. I have the Giants 2B and the Giants 3B. Frisch qualifies at both positions, so I expect to be able to use one of his 2B qualifying seasons in one league and one of his 3B qualifying seasons in another. I believe the rules say I just can't use them on the same roster.
A: Correct.
