SF to start and score, and some PF on the depth chart, maybe third behind two others.

If a player is on your depth chart as a starter at one position, why would you put him as a second or third player at another position on the depth chart?

I think he's a lights out 3. I would worry about him against a decent offensive PF .

He would also be an awesome guy to play as the backup 2-3-4 but I would be concerned he didn't play enough minutes that way.

One of the benefits is the ability to get more minutes for your better subs. For example, imagine that the OP's player starts at SF and has a really good backup behind him at SF (but who lacks the skills needed to play PF) and the only backup PF is a mediocre freshman. In that case you might do something like this.

SF: SF1, SF2, SF3
PF: PF1, SF1, empty, PF2

When PF1 goes to the bench, the first substitution preference will be SF2 at SF and SF1 at PF.

Because the back up 3 is better than the back up 4.

It's really because of fatigue. I tend to go three deep on all teams and four in press. That way, I don't lose because of a unrested player. I said third so he is really at PF in case your starter and back-up get winded. Plus, I would put him as getting tired to start at SF.

In in NT when people actually gamelan, he's a 2-3-4 backup guy. His only flaw is low D and that will help hide it.

Otherwise just start him at 3.

It would depend on team need, but I'd prefer him at the 3. But it gives you flexibility in who you can recruit to play around him, which is always nice. Jason Williams has been a starter for me at both post positions in the past but this season he's been my starting 3. I prefer him as a PF, but I felt my greater need this season was at the smaller position. May have cost him a few spots on the Methodist career rebounding leaderboard, but I think we can both live with that.
