Draft, Signability and the Pick 1(1) Topic

2 Questions:

1. Has anyone here ever drafted a potentially unsignable player with the 1st overall pick and if so does that effect their chances of signing?

2. Has anyone ever considered intentionally picking a potentially unsignable player at 1(1) or a similar top pick due to a draft class that lacked a true #1 pick in your scouting and if did it work out? (i.e. betting on the next draft netting you a better player with the comp pick and risking a bit of ceiling if the guy signs)

Also just so I don't get a lot of tanking comments, the team in question has a very young ML roster that is on pace to improve its win total by 20 or so games. It's my first time getting a top 3 pick in my 15 drafts, so I want to get it right.

1. Probably not. Can't say for sure.
2. Many have.

1. Yes. I don't believe so, in my case they still held out for more money. And because it was 1.1, the price was ridiculous. Mine wanted $9M.

2. In my case I was sandbagging a bit. It was a new team (before you could inherit prior owners budget) which meant I only had $14M in scouting. The "doubtful" sign guy was a legit #1 though, if I could trust my scouting. Looking back I should have used the email bug to offer him multiple times but I decided to roll the dice on the next draft. Ended up being a solid mid-rotation pitcher. Would have rather had the monster bat.

Thanks Mike and Brian. I appreciate the feedback, especially the detailed response Brian.

The email bug is really handy though, if a new owner is reading this thread and doesn't know what Brian is talking about. If a prospect rejects an offer (not asks for more money, but outright rejects you), you can use the link from the negotiation emails to re-offer the player until he accepts your offer. Not sure if it always works, but when does, it can really save your draft.
