How bout success? Topic

What qualifies as "success" when dealing with recruits? I'm trying to get a better understanding overall with things. As a lifetime mediocre coach, I feel like I'm on the right path now. But say for example I'm the only human coach in my conference (I am currently), and I win the conference more often than not (I'm heading that direction), and I'm a team that makes the tournament every year but never make the S16 (which is sad, but it's the reality of my success in this game up to this point). I've never seen anything other than neutral to this point (only 4 seasons back in to this). What would I have to do to reach "good" status?

Go deeper in the tourney.

Or leave your conf full of Sims and compete in a conf full of humans. boost your RPI.

Recruit better players.

If you consider yourself "mediocre" why not reach out to get tips for reaching the next level?

benis, the0nlyis, noleaniml, and chapelhillne have all helped me a **** ton. Send someone a sitemail. the0nlyis is often online chatting
at this link Catch him online and see if he can help.

I'm not as experienced as any of them, but willing to give feedback if you wanna send a sitemail.

Agreed, I also consider myself a very mediocre coach in this game. the0nlyis reached out to me to offer tips. I really learned a lot about what to look for and not look for in recruits. A lot of things I thought were true about gameplanning were apparently not true. I’m in year 2 of my post-0nly pep talk and I’m really liking where my C+ Mount St. Mary’s squad is heading.

I've talked to a few good coaches on here thru sitemail. And I'm being modest in my assessment of my coaching skills. I feel I'm on the come up now. So that part I'm ok with. I feel I'm on the right path now. In my 4 seasons in 3.0 I went from 9 wins, to 13, to 20, and now I'm on 13-6 with a average rpi. But I just graduated my 5 best guys that were on the team when I got it. So a down season was expected (I had 0 open scholarships the first season I could recruit, 2 the second season. I got a decent guy and a bum. Then I reached out. My 3rd season was MY best to date "ranked 15th with 3 recruits" if anybody cares about that. and last season I brought in MY best class ever "ranked 11th with 5 recruits"...... so I'm headed in the right direction, even if I'm not there yet, I'm progressing. But my question wasn't really about basics as in "get better, do better, be better". My question is..... what qualifies for "wants success" to be good instead of neutral. Like where is it weighted? If I win my conference every season for the next 20 years, and lose in the first round, is that the good success recruits want? If my rpi is in the 50-60 range with a 16-14 record but I win a couple tourney games each year, is that the good success recruits want? And thank you for responses and input

This doesn't have anything to do with my topic, but when I first started playing years ago (I don't know what version of the game it was, but I think I played back when it was somewhere around seasons 30 to 60 in most worlds), the biggest problem I had, was the overall perception of recruiting. Now I understand it better than the past. I always looked at it like..... there's, what, 324 D1 teams? Well, as a D2 coach, I would think any player ranked in the top 200 at their position would NEVER play at a D2 school. Cuz why would a top 200 PG choose D2 when he has 324 D2 schools to choose from? Using that (incorrect) thought process, the best PG in D2 would be ranked 325 at his position. I obviously know better now. But I have noticed that there's coaches out there that don't post, and don't reach out for help, and still don't understand you can reach higher. I often wonder if that's the way they look at recruiting as well.

It sounds to me with your strong recruiting classes, if those high player ratings are well balanced in skillsets, and you manage your team well with gameplay and scheduling decisions, you're well on your way to a higher RPI.

higher RPI means better NT seed means more NT wins means "very good" for a recruit that wants success. I don't know the exact threshold required, but it sounds like you're progressing toward it!
