Draft=Random good late round players Topic

More people might put more effort and more scouting into the draft if every once in while people that had higher scouting got a random good player in the later rounds. Good players are drafted in later rounds of the real baseball drafts, why not WIS?

How would that work? Say you and I both have 20m in HS scouting. I see 15 players that I consider Rd1 quality. I will rank them 1-15. Good players won't drop to random late rounds.

It would be totally random, kind of like the DITR players. Owners would receiver a higher chance of getting a good random player in the later rounds based on their budgeted scouting amount, higher scouting amount equals higher percentage for random good players in later rounds. In your example we both would receive the same random chance of getting a good player in the later rounds of the draft. However, our percentage chance to receive a good player in the later rounds would be much higher then an owner that budgeted 10 million towards scouting, maybe even twice as high or higher. The lower an owner budgeted for scouting the lower the chance for random good players in the lower rounds.

They seem to be completely random drops. I got Lawrence Urich in Round 21.

FWIW, when I see owners minimizing or even punting the draft, it's because they've already made budgetary decisions to pay for a veteran team, go after free agents, or invest heavily in Internationals.

I'm not sure it's not already happening.

This is what I was going to say, but couldn't find the two guys I've seen.

I've seen at least 4 so far who were drafted in rnd 15 or later who were decent BL caliber players.

Used to never see that.

What irony, getting a Pujols that can hit late in the draft.

The running joke in my world is he is the second best Puljos drafted after the 10th round.

Thanks for the examples guys. I have only heard of one player previously. Now I have heard of 6 players. Now how many seasons are those 6 players spread out over? We are still talking about a very small amount of random players per lots of different draft classes. How about if we somehow use the formula that I suggested (that way owners that invest in the draft are rewarded) and just increase the volume of these type players?

Are we? Seems to me that everyone posting in this thread has examples. It's entirely possible that there are dozens in each draft and, quite honestly, could be more because a lot of owners don't sign anyone outside the first few rounds.

Levi Baez went unsigned by his drafting franchise. I found him while rooting around in the free agent pool the next season, just looking for an extra body to fill a minor league DH spot. Instead I found a major league one.

Exactly. Owners are getting upset because they don't get any late round studs, then don't sign anyone past the 6th round.

Everyone in my draft that asks for slot gets an offer. At the end of the year if I have money, even the idiots that were a 23rd round pick that ask for too much get it.

I think what cinmark is saying is that the number of good random later round draft picks is very low. I have only seen one such player in OCD world in 44 seasons. I agree with cinmark that more of these type players in EVERY draft would be great, especially if it were based on an owners scouting rating. Hopefully the higher rated scouting amount would garner more random good late round draft picks.
