If you could only give one piece of advice to a new owner what would it be? I'm just trying to learn. I'm reading all I can. Also I saw somewhere there was an updated list of experienced players who was willing to mentor new players. If someone is willing I would love to learn from a successful coach.

20m in training. Development/decline in physical skills.

If there is a veteran who disagrees, I'd like him to post the reason why.

Don't make any trades for your first 2 seasons. Learn all you can before committing yourself to something you might regret soon after.

If you have specific questions, don't be afraid to ask veterans who aren't in your world.

Any time you have a question, post it here. Or in the ask the MikeT thread. You can pick up the game very fast. Don't listen to other owners in your league. Especially if they are trying to trade with you.

Always watch the waiver wire. Every time you check your stats. You would be shocked at the type of players you can sweep up. Superstars? No. But you can find solid middle relievers and bench players that will help you through your season.

Make sure you don't accidentally pick up a terrible contract via waivers though.

Very good point. Check those contracts. Learn about player options. Don't pick up dead money.

Understand how to access the recommended defensive ratings for each position : (three simple steps)... GM > Edit Roster > (then simply click the link on any fielding position; CF, SS, etc ...)

You will see a standard reference chart for the recommended ratings for each defensive position. Take notes and then go evaluate your team to see how well they fit into the recommended ratings. Pay close attention to SS and CF. Keeping the positions as close to or above the recommended ratings will help your pitching staff maintain their ERA. If you have a slugger playing a position where he is well under the recommended ratings, consider moving him to a defensive position where is his defensive ratings are more adequate. For ex : moving an out of position SS to 3b or LF. Most of the crap teams in any given league simply don't understand the value of solid def. SS and CF defense have the biggest impact on ERA. Those guys do not have to be offensive heroes. Your pitching staff will thank you though... if your SS and CF can make some + plays.
