At what point does offensive ability not matter? Topic

I see quite a few players while scouting who could easily be offensive powerhouses in my D2 and D3 worlds, but are hovering in semi dangerous territory in with regards to ATH and DEF. I have already established that the 55 ATH 35 DEF center on my Millsaps team is just too low for a man to man defense. I am just wondering what a good threshold would be for potential perennial scorers who would have around 50/50 for ATH/DEF.

Obviously it could vary slightly for each defense, so if it makes a difference I have a team that runs FCP and a team that runs a 2-3 zone.

I’ll use this dude from Mike’s old team as an example. This guy can very clearly shoot the lights out, especially on a D3 team, but he would have a hard time guarding my 90 year old grandmother. Basically my question is, is this dude really viable? If not, where would he need to be to become useful?

Hes a PG. hes quick, he can shoot the 3, seems to have a lot more growth in the BH/P department. His low ATH/DEF will result in giving up more fouls but in a 3-2 Zone that Mike always ran it will be less of an issue as long as there is a SG & SF with high ATH/DEF.

You have to get creative in a full conference where all the coaches are competing for the same talented recruits in the area.

Good question....

Here are my thoughts:

I try not to trade defense for offense in post players. ATH is just so valuable in rebounding/defense I don't like to go below 60 at D3. I mean I do when I have to but my A list almost always has 60 ATH as a cut off. There just aren't a lot of high ATH low DEF guys out there so it isn't a big deal. If I end up with a 40 ATH post player with high LP, he's almost always slotted for the bench. I would take one of the 40 ATH/DEF, 100 LP with good rebounding over the all 60 (ATH/DEF/LP/REB/SB) guy if I: a.) had to b.) had two starters all ready.

On the wings, I am more likely to do it. It's really hard to stop the 90 speed 90 PER guard from being an effective scorer. I will take those guys as career backups when it fits my team. At D3, in a perfect world, I'd want them to be 30+ ATH and DEF but I've dipped into the teens before.

I don't see the thing the same way. If the guy can hit 95-100 lp, he is a huge boost off the bench. I would not start him. I value ath-def more in post players. Reb will tell me if he gets to SF or PF-C

He's maybe useable. If you can be elite in two things then he can make up for the bad Def. Since he could be a great scorer and great passer, he might fit the bill. If he was just elite in scoring and just average in passing then I'd say no.

On a championship team in DIII, i had a pg with 90s spd bh pass and per but a 20 def and ath. He was a beast. His defense was an issue but i would try to play the matchups if needed.
