Does anybody have any details on exactly what goes into the selection of diamond in the rough players?

Who's eligible (age, OVR, years of service?)
Most of the DITR players are 18/20 when selected but I've seen some 24 year olds too. I've noticed most players are below 50 in OVR, but have seen a couple that are just above at like 50/51.
Most are in the first year but some up to their 3rd year of service.

Is there any rhyme or reason to exactly who gets selected?

It would appear that most players selected have a high number of appearances in the season (not on inactive, in the starting lineup, etc)

So I have my own personal observations listed but I am wondering if anybody knows about any specific criteria for what I have listed, or any other information.

Only thing that is definitive is their OVR has to be below a certain threshold. Don't recall what the exact number is, but it is around what you define above.

I want to say a high makeup rating raises the likelihood but i don't know if it is actually a requirement or not.

A couple things I’ve noticed is that DITRs improve significantly in everything. So usually guys with low OVR but high specific ratings like control or power or first pitch or whatever, don’t become DITRs because they can’t improve in all categories. So the guys I aim for to be DITR have low ratings in all categories, just not too low. Like pitchers with 30s across the board, take a chance with them

Has anyone ever gotten a DitR for a player on the 40-man?

I had a DitR defensive C that could sorta hit LH pitching who played several seasons in the BL, so I'm 1 for around 450.

As I recall, DITR max age is 24 and OVR is under 60. Inactive players do not get designated, AFAIK.

I've also had exactly one DiTR who turned into a major league mainstay. 18th-round RP. First three seasons he was lights out; won ROY; but after his third he started getting hit harder and I let him walk in free agency. One thing though, he has no problem pitching in close to 100 games a season, and it's pretty awesome being able to roll with a three man bullpen.

I've had a few, but they are normally a setup B or a role bench player. Very rare for something other than that. I believe I had a long reliever that started maybe 25 games in his career (I was going with a 4 man rotation for 2 years, and occasionally letting him start).

I have had better luck getting good draft picks in the 15th or later rounds, 1, compared to a good DITR, 0.

They have to be younger than 24, and it seems like some draft rounds are more likely to turn into DiTR than others. Seventh round, in particular, seems to have good luck. I've had several of these guys turn into useful contributors or better.
