If two division winners tie for the second best record in their league, is home field for the LDS determined by the head-to-head record? I used to be able to find this in the knowledge base (I think) but can't find it in the new layout or with a search; nor do the contrarian threads appear to address it specifically. Per mlb.com head-to-head does appear to be the first tiebreaker in the majors.

Turned out to be academic this time, but does anyone know?

Thanks. I did see those but they don't directly answer the question, which is how do you break a tie among division champions for the second seed in the playoffs?

From the first link i posted:

In the case of a two-way tie at the end of the regular season in which a playoff appearance is at stake, a 1 game playoff will be scheduled between the two teams. This is only in a situation where only one of the two teams will make it into the playoffs. If both teams will make it into the playoffs, one as the division winner and the other as the wildcard, the divisional winner is determined by best head-to-head record. If they are the same, the next tiebreaker is divisional record. If they are still the same, a one-game tiebreaker is scheduled to determine who will be the divisional winner and who will be the wildcard.

Let's say they were both division champs, one from the NL East, the other from the NL Central, both finished 95-67. If the NL West winner had a lesser record, they fall into the #3 slot. Your two 95-67 teams have their seeding determined per the help thread info. If the NL West winner finished above them, then they would face each other in the NLDS, the tiebreaker would only determine home field advantage/higher seed 2 versus 3.

The tiebreaker protocol breaks any existing ties, to rank division winners, or to rank 2 playoff bound teams from the same division, with the exception of the one game playoff, or to break 3 way ties.

Thanks again.

That makes sense, it just doesn't say that specifically. The bolded language says "one as the division winner and the other as the wildcard." In this situation the wild card was not involved. I see that the same principle should apply (and it does under MLB rules) but it's not spelled out. I thought I remembered it having been spelled out in the past, and/or a developer chat that said MLB rules were used.

If the best record and the wild card are your top two records and you have a division under .500 does the 1 seed play the Wild Card or the worst record?

#1 seed plays the wild card UNLESS the WC is in the same division as the #1 seed.

Okay thank you.
