Hit and Run question Topic

I've been setting hit and run higher in some of my leagues recently. I've noticed that whenever there is an HR next to my team in the boxscore, it's never a bad result - the runner either stays out of the DP, takes an extra base or safely returns to first.

If there is a negative result, like a hitter striking out and runner getting thrown out at second, does the HR still show up? Just surprises me that I haven't seen a negative result yet.

I’ve wondered this before as well but don’t check box scores enough to know. I always assumed that failed steal attempts were a direct result of being more aggressive here, as well as getting thrown out when trying to take the extra base.

Yes, there are caught stealing on failed hit and runs. When I used to use '88 Boggs as a leadoff man a lot, he'd get several caught stealing each season even with a SB setting of 0. I've seen it in box scores before.

Interesting. So why doesn't that still show up as HR in the boxscore? If there's a flyout, and a guy gets back to first, you'll still see the HR. It's odd they wouldn't tell you when a CS was the result of a failed HR.

I don't read box scores anymore so I haven't seen this situation in years. I'll keep an eye out though since most of my teams are aggressive on the bases.

I see strike em out/throw em out CS's all the time. I always have wondered why Sparky chooses to H/R with 2 strikes so often. IF I had my druthers I'd prefer NOT to hit and run with 2 strikes on the batter very often at all!

The engine is not choosing to hit and run with two strikes. In this game, there's no such thing as a two-strike count, since individual pitches are not determined as ball/strike. A total number of pitches thrown are assigned to the pitcher after a PA event concludes.

When a box score shows a strike out/caught stealing double play, the engine determined the hit and run was part of the PA, and the outcome of the PA was a strikeout. The runner is then determined out/safe as if they were attempting a straight steal.

skunk's 1st paragraph is how i understood the thing for a decade or more now

2nd, well, reading boxscores a long time i get the sense it helps reduce double plays but does not help runners get an extra base

what i would hope it does is -power +contact +push

what i wish it did is help you score a fast guy from 1st and a slow guy from 2nd on something sharply hit to the outfield

but i think it just keeps slow guys from doubling up

I see guys go from first to third a lot, with HR next to it in the boxscore. Not sure if they would've gotten there anyway, but just something to note.

Hit and run absolutely helps players get extra bases on hits and avoid double plays on ground ball outs.

show me some numbers

That would be pretty hard to do without going through every single boxscore and logging the data.
