1975 Team Icon Progressive needs 1 (SFG) Topic

The 1975 Team Icon League needs an owner for the Giants. The basic premise of the league is that you cannot have any player on your roster unless he played for your team at some point in his career. Any player who played only for your team you get automatically without drafting them (Cal Ripken Jr, Barry Larkin, Tony Gwynn, etc.) and anyone else goes into the regular rookie draft. Trading is hot and heavy in the league to get ahead of the other teams that can take your guys. We are just passed Game 120 in the 1974 season. The Giants are currently in 2nd Place in the NL West behind the Reds. They are in line for the 9th Pick (out of 16.) The Giants have a pretty good draft this season with Gary Carter leading the way. The Giants roster for 1975 is as follows:

If you are interested in the league but don't like the Giants we are going to be expanding from 16 to 20 teams for the start of the 1977 Season. If you're interested in any of the following teams and would like to join as an expansion franchise please let me know your interest and team and I'll contact you towards the end of the 1976 season. We will be adding 2 NL and 2 AL teams.

NL Teams
Atlanta Braves
Chicago Cubs
Montreal Expos - 20ks
San Diego Padres

AL Teams
Cleveland Indians
Kansas City Royals - NebHusker
Milwaukee Brewers
Seattle Mariners
Texas Rangers
Toronto Blue Jays - ljemd

Here are the rules we followed in 1966 to move from 12 to 16 teams.
1) In real life drafts, whenever there are expansion teams, they select at the end of the round in their first draft. So the four new teams will pick in picks 17-20. This order will be in the opposite order of the expansion draft.

2) Expansion draft/Protecting players. In each round of the expansion draft, existing franchises must make players available to the new teams. In the First-round teams may protect up to three players, but must leave at least two players available. In the second round, teams may protect two additional players (5 total) but must leave at least one player unprotected. In the final round, teams may protect one more player, while leaving one player unprotected. If expansion teams wish, they may select a franchises 3rd round draft pick rather than a player. Additionally, there will be no add/drop period after the draft. If you roster a player prior to the expansion draft and that player is not selected by an expansion team, you have to keep him or trade him.

3) One-year transitions for current Team Icons. Any player who is currently a Team Icon because he played for a once defunct, now active franchise, may be utilized on your roster according to career keeper guidelines for one season only. Beginning in 1978 that player would have to be on an active roster or cut. For example, prior to 1977 Hal McRae was a Team Icon for the Reds, because the Royals were not in our league. According to the rules, McRae could be placed on IR in 1978 because he played for the Royals. That's fine for one more season. In 1978, he is no longer a career keeper and should be cut or rostered. Of course, the Reds could make him available in the expansion draft if the Royals are picked as an expansion team.

I have interest in Cleveland depending on what the rules of expansion are, as to what access to Cleveland players I would have.

I will put in an early claim on the Expos.

Added Expansion Rules. Also if someone wanted to get a jump on things we do have a transition process for moving teams, so you could take the Giants now and transition them into the Padres. You'd get to keep Perry in the deal.

Basically, you'd have three years to transition all of your Giant players to Padres.
1975: Maximum of 15 San Francisco players eligible
1976: Maximum of 8 San Francisco players eligible
1977: No remaining San Francisco players

I'm thinking about joining but I'm pretty new to progressives so trying to wrap my head around this one. . . .first question is: epup1975 lists Willie Wilson and Dan Quisenberry on the Royals list but they both played for other teams in their careers (Wilson - A's & Cubs, Quis - Cardinals). Am I not understanding that list correctly???

Those are called Team Icons. They played at least 10 consecutive years(year 1 must be their 1st WIS eligible season) & no more than 3 full seasons with of teams after that. That's why Wilson & Quisenberry would be the Royals property.

If you like trading, this league has a ton of it.
10/12/2018 2:15 PM
epup is correct in his explanation. Think of it like our version of a 10/3 rule. Other than the 10/3 rule a brief explanation of the difference between Career Keepers and Team Icons are that Career Keepers are players who have every single one of their WiS seasons with one team. You get these guys without having to draft them. Usually these are guys who only played for your team (Cal Ripken, Johnny Bench, etc.) but for instance Ryne Sandberg is also a Career Keeper for the Cubs because every one of his WiS seasons are with them.

Other than the 10/3 and Career Keepers every player is eligible to be drafted by every team they played at least one game for in their career. If a player played for multiple teams, but yours is the only one in the league you get that guy automatically as well.

As epup said trading is hot and heavy in these leagues because of the limited pool. For instance in the upcoming 1975 Draft one of the top guys available is Gary Carter. The Expos, Mets, Dodgers and Giants will probably all try to trade/jockey to get ahead of each other to get him.

I'm in the year 2000 version of ICON and I've got to tell you all one thing. YOU WILL NOT REGRET JOINING IF YOU ARE ACTIVE. Trading is WAY off the hook and CrazyJoe is right at the top of commissioners whose leagues I've played in. If I didn't have too many teams already I would join myself. Anywho, this is a great opportunity to get in a really great league if you really like the GM aspect of team building. REALLY... In the 2000 version I've been building/rebuilding the A's and it has been nothing short of fun as hell. I can't recommend this highly enough.

Put me down to expand with the Royals in 77, thanks!

Anyone interested in the mid 70s Giants? We are at Game 146 and the Giants are 5 games back of the Reds in the NL West, so they have a shot at the playoffs this year and with their roster they'll be a force for quite some time.
10/17/2018 2:58 PM
I will take the Giants
