Decision on arb or resign your players Topic

How do you guys go about resigning your players with average ratings but has been pretty consistent playing above average to really good? These are the type of players that seem to crap the bed once they get payed and play to their ratings..

Same with players that are above average on ratings but produce well below average numbers.. do some of you guys still take a chance and wait for this player to finally play to their ability... I had a 3B player like this one time. He was kind of bad his first few years then around mid to late 20s, he has been an all star since.

I am surely in the minority but I value performance over ratings. I would rather give another player a chance than to commit to a non productive player

Seeing both sides of this, I think it's up to you how you feel about your ability to read players' ratings and relate them to performance. Specifically, if you have a player who's producing, do you feel confident understanding why? If he seems to be over-delivering, can you figure out what the reason for it is, and is it sustainable? Conversely, if a player's disappointing, can you figure out why? And is he always going to be like that?

This is where it also helps to have another set of eyes, another owner who you trust and read the game the same way as. And who hopefully isn't conflicted about helping you out.

I sincerely think each world is different. As I am evaluating whether or not I am going to re-sign a player, I look at my farm, the trade block, and current year free agency to see how replacable he is. If the player has something unique that I look for, I may go to free agency and query four years out to see how rare my guy actually is. If the guy I have is average, but he has ratings that I prefer (ie Maybe I like guys with contact, speed, and right split) - are there guys out there that play the same position? If so, what will it take to get that guy on my team to replace my current guy? If it is more than what I'm willing to give up, I re-sign my current player.

Also need to consider his position. Typically, premium defensive positions (SS,2b, CF, 3b) lose their value more quickly than 1b or corner outfielders unless they are excellent hitters. But, if they were excellent fielders and also excellent hitters, it should be a no brainier to keep him and just switch his defensive position where needed. Those 1b/corner outfielders start to slowly lose power in their late twenties. Then around the age of 33-35 they get huge power decreases each year. If the players value is mainly power, you'll need to evaluate that as well.

There are three ways that I evaluate players 1. Ratings, 2. Ratings and 3. Ratings
