You can be successful with D2 players, but I don’t recommend even scouting D3.
At D3, I typically scout local D1 and a D2 state or 3 (to line up some fallbacks). I select prospects into a few different categories. I try to have some primary targets (typically from my D1 pool), and 2-4 backups (mix of D1 and D2) for each scholarship I intend to fill. I try not to get attached to anyone, and spend the first few cycles seeing what higher level teams are doing.
As long as I can line up some D2 fallbacks, I don’t mind taking some moonshots. I expect to lose many of them, but when you get those mid-range D1 players with some potential, they can make you a contender in a hurry.
