D3 Teams Recruiting D1 Prospects: Topic

I am in the second year of a rebuild at a D3 school. Three of my starters are graduating after this season. I have never fully recruited before because I didn't have any seniors last season. My question is should I take a risk and try to go after some D1 players or play it safe and recruit only D3 and D2 prospects?

You can be successful with D2 players, but I don’t recommend even scouting D3.

At D3, I typically scout local D1 and a D2 state or 3 (to line up some fallbacks). I select prospects into a few different categories. I try to have some primary targets (typically from my D1 pool), and 2-4 backups (mix of D1 and D2) for each scholarship I intend to fill. I try not to get attached to anyone, and spend the first few cycles seeing what higher level teams are doing.

As long as I can line up some D2 fallbacks, I don’t mind taking some moonshots. I expect to lose many of them, but when you get those mid-range D1 players with some potential, they can make you a contender in a hurry.

I am glad I asked because I just gained a lot of information I didn't know. It does seem a bit limited with just D3 players. It is difficult to move up without D2 and D! players. It seems worth it to try for the D1 recruits as long as you have D2 backup options.

Yeah - I only recruited D1 when I was at D3, but I have not played D3 in a while, and do not have that much experience with it.

I only target low division I and high division II players and have success with the player pool I bring in.

This makes sense because it would be difficult to move up and be successful only recruiting D3 players. Thanks to everyone who has replied.
