Practice for Off/Def Topic

I am curious what people put for practice times for learning the Offense and Defense.
For the most part, I have run 20-minutes for both, but curious if I should be increasing or decreasing.

I used to set-and-forget after putting 20 minutes in O/D my first day at a new school. I never even thought to look at that again unless I wanted to change my sets for some reason.

Now, I change it slightly based on my current roster. I generally will set out my players' study hall minutes and then gauge "potential ratings improvement" vs. "current IQ". With a roster filled with high potential and high WE guys, maybe I feel like ratings will matter a bit more for the ability to win now. With a roster filled with nearly maxed out or lower WE guys, maybe I want some more players to have that A+ IQ over an A. I also consider what're my current ratings and IQ for my offense compared to my defense. Generally, it depends on how much you value a couple of minutes (I never drop more than 15 minutes in IQ for either O or D) and how in-depth you want to look at the game.

I haven't won a NC in quite some time and was away from the game for a while, so maybe others opinions' are better suited to answer your question!

That's exactly right. I set it and forget it.

I was hoping that someone running a combo DEF would respond. That makes sense and allocates the base 50 minutes. You sacrifice, what, 2/3 of a grade? for the change-up of the combo.

The difference between 20 and 25 is not really significant. Definitely not 2/3 of a grade. But the difference between 20 and 10 is ~2/3, if that’s what you mean.

25/25, set it and forget it, just like what gomiami said.

I said it first bulls. Where's my credit? Respect your elders! Kidding.....

But i think using the 25 instead of 20, isn't a big deal thru the season. But i feel like when deep runs are involved, in the NT, the difference between running 25 all season instead of 20, really benefits you in the E8 and beyond. Having more than a couple A+'s (out of the 24 possible) goes a long way.

Ive always split the difference and ran 23/23

I cannot find the thread to link, however someone at one time did some testing and determined the optimal number to be 18 minutes for O/D. I use 20.

That'd be an interesting thread if you could find it.

One of the best things about this game is that there are lots of valid team building choices. There is no one right answer, no silver bullet. Every practice minutes strategy has a drawback, there is something valuable you’re giving up.

Sorry, I never followed up. Yes. I would guess the 10 minute set would lose a solid 2/3 of a grade...topping out in the B+/A- range.

I have a question along a similar line to this one. I took over a new school and want to change the offensive and defensive sets from Triangle/Press to Flex/Half Press/Man. I intend to have them practice those at 20/10/20. I think I read somewhere that there is no IQ benefit to running a particular set in a game. The players only raise their IQ from practice. Is that correct? If so, I'll continue to run the Triangle/Press in games until their Flex/HCP/Man IQ's get better from practice. Do I have this right? It doesn't "feel" right. I would think players would learn at least "something" from playing the set and not just practicing it.
