0.81 WHIP
Terrifying 1.4 HR/9
HR/9+ unknown

He's been pushing 1.2 HR/9 the past 3 years. If you liked the `18 version I'd say definitely. The improvement from 0.90 to 0.81 WHIP should mitigate the increase from 1.2 to 1.4 HR/9. Not for the fainthearted and obviously best in home parks like the Astrodome and Petco.

I think if he can get the WHIP down to 0.79 or lower then I'd do it -- something about seeing the .7 would give me more confidence lol

I don't think I'll ever use him.

Think it really comes down to how he's priced

As thunder mentioned, he should do just fine in a homer-killing ballpark

But, 1913 Walter Johnson (0.78 WHIP, HR/9+ of 57) seems to play like Robin Roberts in terms of giving up HR and XBH despite the low nominal 0.23 HR/9. If Verlander's HR/9+ is less than 100, it's hard to use him outside of a progressive or a league w/ special theme rules IMHO.

I’m curious to see his HR/9+ is with the juiced balls and all. This season has the most 30 HR guys, and “most new career high in HR” guys in MLB history.

I don’t see it being any better than 104, and my expectation is like 99 or 98. So I’ll probably avoid him and keep using 2011 Verlander in roster twist leagues.

I am looking forward to Giovanny Gallegos, and Brandon Workman (aka Scott Williamson reborn).

But the only pitcher i see I see myself using from this season is Kirby Yates. All the others would just be for fun in less competitive leagues.

edit: and Tyler Glasnow

I’ve had my eye on Glasnow for months, but now that they’re keeping him on a low pitch count it’s going to hamper his ability to be a full season reliever/postseason elimination starter in the sim. He’s pitching 2-3 innings per start since he came back, but man it’s nice to see him healthy - he’s a joy to watch.

In the Verlander vein, Josh Hader has allowed 21 runs...and 14 homers. 0.79 whip and 134 k’s in 73 ip...yet completely unusable in sim.

Someone else mentioned his his months ago but before Matt Shoemaker blew out his knee he made 5 starts, 28.2 ip with a 0.87 whip, .163 oav and 3 hr allowed, which should be ok hr/9#

others - Sean manaea needs a few more innings to hit the minimums but I think he’ll be conserved for the wild card game next week. He’s at 23.2 ip with a 0.80 whip and 3 hr allowed. If I had to guess I think the guy I’m most likely to use is JB Wendelken (never heard of him before this week) - 32.1 ip, 0.93 whip, 2 homers, and 1.25 ip/g which I like. He should be ~1mm in sim.

It's going to depend on how much Verlander costs. If he can fit into a 100m or 110m cap league then he'll be fine. Maybe even 120m. Walter '13 is fine against those kinds of hitters. It's just that Walter is so expensive that you can't usually get him into those leagues. I find that the 100-120m leagues are mostly populated by low HR hitters. It's only when you get above 120m that you see a lot more Ruth/Gehrig/Mantle/Williams.

Agreed that it's hard to fit Walter '13 into those lower cap leagues. But, in the higher cap leagues I think there are still a good number of negative HR parks used and he still isn't nearly as effective as he should be.

Separately, '00 Pedro had the lowest HR/9 at 0.71 and has a great HR/9+ and a HR/9# of around 0.40 if memory serves. But, he still gives up far more HR than he should because the sim is too focused on the nominal numbers. IMHO, Pedro should be at least as effective as shutting down HR as the deadballers are but he isn't.

Completely forgot about Shoe-by. And Manaea goes against the Mariners tonight!

One player I’m cautiously optimistic about is Kyle Tucker.

He recently crossed the 50 AB threshold, he’s batting .304 with 6 doubles, 3 homers, and 5 SB w/o getting caught

So I’d say he’d be at a 121 AVG+, 10 2B/100AB#, and 4 HR/100AB#. Decent pinch hitter. Hope he doesn’t ruin it in the last 4 games of the year, but it’ll be against Angels pitching at the very least.

Nick Castellanos' partial season... 225pa, 321/356/646 with 21 doubles in 225 PAs. Going to be a great platoon partner for someone, though it may have to be as a DH.
9/26/2019 4:56 PM
Gallegos 0.778whip, 1.0 hr/9, 72 IP so far...Flaherty and Cole will be good.

J.T. Realmuto with 593 PA, OPS+ of 108, and an A+ arm could be a good value depending on price.
