1990 outlook - excellent, championship contender. Excellent hitting and defense, strong pitching. Has enough PAs at every position, more than enough at OF to cover DH, 1B, and OF (Morris is only half time). Has 1557 IP. Needs nothing this year. Nearly 99 million salary before draft - very high for this league.
1991 outlook - good. Pete Rose is a star. Hitting and defense are covered at all positions and is pretty good. pitching is very good but as of today has only 1222 IP - need 200. more IP.
1991 rookies worth calling up: DH Reggie Jefferson, P Chris Hammond
1991 other roster moves: cut Jack Armstrong and Lee Guetterman, 3 picks or less (depending on 1990 draft)
1992 outlook: only OK. No stars on offense, but all positions and PAs are covered decently. Pitching has over 1300 IP over, but other than a couple excellent relievers is so-so. Need 3 players in draft, as of today.
1992 rookies worth calling up: OF Reggie Sanders, P Bobby Ayala, maybe P Tim Pugh (or maybe not)
1992 other roster moves: Cut Lonnie Smith, Kal Daniels, and Jim Clancy.
1993 outlook: decent, Ken Griffey, Jr. enters his peak, a few very good pitchers, 1400 IP available already, all PAs covered at all positions except Larkin needs a back-up at SS.
1993 rookies worth calling up: C Dan Wilson, RPs Johnny Ruffin, Scott Sevice, Jerry Spradlin
1993 other roster moves: cut Rob Dibble
1994 has Paul O'Neil's epic season, Ken Griffey, Jr. at the top of his game, Steve Ontiveros at his amazing one-hit wonder self, and multiple relief aces.
Cincy's big weakness in the 90s is never developing an effective starting pitcher. So the new owner will need to pick up a few decent IPs for the future in the first round of most drafts. Drafts in this league are just deep enough to be able to do so. So, draft well, focus on adding pitching, and this team has great position players to make it happen.
