Type A/B Free Agents Topic

Hello,

Does anyone know the formula for determining type A/B free agent compensation? Thanks!

From the Player's Guide;

Type A free agents are defined as players in the top 20% of all players at their position groups based on current ratings. The position groups include C, 1B/OF/DH, 2B/3B/SS, SP and RP. If you sign a Type A free-agent, you will forfeit your first round pick in the upcoming Amateur Draft to the player's previous franchise. If your first round pick is in the top 16 of the draft, then you forfeit your second round pick instead. The player's previous franchise also receives a supplemental round pick between rounds 1 and 2.

A Type B free-agent is defined as any player who falls in the top 21% - 40% of all players at his position group. If you sign a Type B free-agent, the player's former franchise will be compensated with a sandwich pick between round 1 and round 2.

Thanks! Do we know how performance contributes to those rankings or how attributes are weighed?

It’s all ratings. I’ve kept guys in the minors all year only to let them go for a comp pick lol

Performance and weighting, I believe, don't factor. Far as I know it's just the Overall rating.

Do you mean you do not release them?
Or you purposely do not play them in the ML for a different reason?

Sorry, should’ve clarified. Towards the end of free agency or spring training I always shoot to add a couple guys with overall ratings that will generate compensation picks. Sometimes they won’t help the big league club and are just depth, and I’ll just assign them to AAA or whichever level needs a guy.

I usually structure the deals as 1 year or 2 years with a mutual option on the second (If they decline the second season you’ll get a comp pick. Which they’ll do most times when they sign way under their initial demands). Then after the seasons over don’t resign them and hope somebody else picks them up so I get the pick.

I really like the draft and put a lot in scouting so this is a way for me to justify that by loading up on picks (I think I had 6 comp picks this last draft). Sometimes I’ll scrounge around other teams anybody that’s been demoted or underused that can turn into a comp pick as well
