I’m thinking of drafting a 3 pitch Starting pitcher. I’ve been burned by some of these guys in the past - it’s tough for me to rate them, and they usually seem worse than I expect. Anyone have any advice on how you factor the limited number of pitches when rating these guys?

I think 3 pitches is plenty for a starter, if they are all high rated pitches (P1 above 80, P3 above 50)

Hm. Interesting. My bias against 3 pitch guys has been part of my player strategy for years. When I was very new at this game I read something about them not being very reliable. Or at least I thought I did. Could it be that I’ve been mistaken this whole time?

I don't really know to be honest id look at ml ones in your worlds and what kind of whips if any are high id compare those ratings to good stats

The old consensus used to be that they're "inconsistent."

I had one who had pretty much a lot of good ratings except for only three pitches. He won one Cy and had a runner-up as well. Actually didn't have a great start to his career but got much better after age 30. Great DUR/STA so he had a bunch of games where he'd give up two or three runs in the early innings then go lights out for six after that. I had to learn to trust him, but he became a real workhorse.

I dunno how, but this guy gets the job done for me.
Not elite, but good enough.
Maybe I could be using him different.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Player Profile: Jose Martin - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports does once promoted. But if I can get a legit prospect for him now I'd take it.

So far so good. 7 GS, 7 wins with a 2.5 ERA and a decent 1.21 WHIP.

one of my best all time pitchers in that same world was a 3 pitch guy. He is the world career leader in K/BB ratio and is #4 in career WHIP.
