It always makes me laugh when the kid's mother is his agent.

"He has his heart set on finishing college."

Really, Mom? Who is it that REALLY has their heart set on him finishing college?

And they'll always turn down like $8.5M. If my mom turned down $8.5M on my behalf, she wouldn't be my agent anymore. Also, she wouldn't be my mom anymore.

I have now had two seasons in a row where I had $10M+ dead money in one of my Worlds and both times I had a draft pick where his mommy was his agent and wanted $8.5M to sign. In both instances I continued to negotiate with his mother despite her turning me down over and over again. Both instances concluded with me signing said player and then releasing him right after I sign him due to the player being trash. I know it is a small sample, but maybe there is something to the fact that mommy thinks her son is better than he is.

Momma's boys never (99.9%) sign on the first offer. So that's something you can bank on if you want to punt your first round pick and get the supplemental next season.

The first rule of sports mom (and dad) is that the kid is never anywhere near as good as they think he or she is.

I have been burned on this before. I had the first overall pick in a league I just joined, so my scouting budget was only $14. I picked a mother agent kid expecting he’d decline my offer so I could pick again next year when I had better scouting.

it failed, he signed, and I wasted a draft pick. His mother told me to “take good care of my boy.” I did not. He was worthless and I released him a couple seasons later.

I've seen it happen when the player was the best hitter in the draft, the owner thought he'd wasted the pick, and the kid signed right away. First ballot HOF.

Too bad that wasn’t my pick!

if I really want a Mother agent guy, I’ll draft him and try to sign him. If you keep trying over and over, there’s a good chance you can sign him by the end of the season. I’d say the chance of rejection is probably like 95% rather than 99%*. So if you keep making offers like 15-20 times, you can probably get him.

I found an old forum post from 2014 where someone said they offered a probably won't sign/mother consultant 32 times in a row (ie. without waiting for a response), and the 33rd time he signed. This was even offering his original demand after the pick countered for more money.

I know the prevailing guidance is wait for an answer, but I'm curious about this strategy. Has anyone tried it? Theoretically, if there is even a chance they might accept on the initial offer on point (ie. without waiting), are your chances better just offering 4/5 times a day vs. waiting 4/5 days for a response?

So update: I've offered him 37 times to no avail lol. This was after I waited twice for him to straight up refuse my offer. I figure I can offer him about 100 more times, so surely he would have to sign eventually right? ha. I'm hoping the odds of offering him every cycle (which in total I can do around 150 times) is better than offering him and waiting for response (which I could've done maybe 8-10 times).

Definitely following for your results of this experiment :)

Welp I'm up to 87 offers and still nothing lol. His original demand was $6,000,000, so I sent 34 offers at that demand and 53 offers at $7,500,000 (all my prospect budget left). I still have a week left of the regular season, and then the playoffs. So I'm thinking I could almost get to 100 more offers lol. Wondering if I should've stuck to waiting, or whether both ways wouldn't have worked.
