Prep for Spring Training Topic

Greetings...thanks for all the help you've provided this n00b...loving the game so far...

About to start first Spring Training. Other than invites, what else needs to be done? I've seen references to how many ABs and IPs you'd like during Spring Training, but other than setting the lineup what do you do? For example, I'd rather not have my starters go overly deep into the game. Do I simply change their target pitch counts in the Player Settings page? It seems there might be something different for Spring Training, or maybe just that the manager/game knows to limit pitches/innings?

Thanks again for all your help!

For me starters go 40 pitches max.

all others get between 10-20 to maximize pitchers I can get into the game.

managers setting are at inning 5 defensive replacements if winning or losing by 1 or more. Means as long as the game isn’t a tie I get more players into the game.

I usually have prospects start with vets on the bench or in the bullpen.

make sure all your prospects you want to see gain ratings bumps got a spring training invite.

Ok...but this is all in the regular Player Settings section, not some special Spring Training section, right? Meaning, same settings we'll use in the regular season.

Right.
don’t forget to switch em back after spring training.

Seems you have to do more, cuz my star CF played whole game. After game I went thru Def Subs, and made sure he was marked as allowing to be pinch hit for. Anything else?

It also set all my non-ML pitchers invited to Spring Training set as "Rest"...I moved them all into arbitrary roles hoping they get into the game...don't know if I needed to do this. I had already set pitch counts for all of them.

I'll guess you may not have had any other players available to come in at CF... you have to make sure the backups are available off the bench. And don't leave it up to the AI to set your depth chart.

I know this isn't obvious, but the AI is almost completely programmable. What that does is make it completely dumb. It'll do as much as it can of what you tell it to do, but nothing you don't explicitly tell it to do.

Usually on the day of Rule 5, when there is literally nothing else you can do with your roster, I take about fifteen minutes to set up my spring training team. Yeah, it's a pain in the ***. But one part of it is counting the roster positions, making sure I have backups and figuring out the depth chart manually. If needed, I'll even switch the minor leaguers' positions just to make sure I have enough backups and they get playing time. Did I say it's a pain in the ***?

And yeah, you have to do the same for the pitching staff.

In the manager settings, I set substitutions this way:
Defensive subs if winning by 1 run in the 7th
Player rest if winning by 1 run in the 5th
Player rest if losing by 1 run in the 5th

I also set pinch hitting, pinch running, and double switches to very aggressive.

I always set it up after the rollover of a new season while waiting for the league to fill. It’s one of the few things you can actually do during that time.

Ah crap. I forgot about that because it’s always a pain in the ***.

set player positions (which takes a while)

set pinch hitting defensive rest and defensive replacements (which takes a while and you will have to do again after spring training.

set your starters and your lineup.

Set pitch counts.

set manager settings....... I think that is it? All of it has become so mechanical now I don’t think about it.
