High Durability, High Stamina Pitcher Usage Advice Topic

I'm looking to possibly make a trade and one of the players involved is Fernando Falu, who has a rating breakdown I've never really seen before and I'm trying to figure out best usage to better evaluate him. I often use shorter starters (55 stamina or so) and find this is an underrated source of starters. Falu projects to 50+ stamina, but also has 93 durability, meaning that he could throw 65 pitches basically every game.

Biggest questions are 1) how I'd use him? Opener for every game? Reliever for every game? and 2) if he's good enough to be used that much - splits vRHB and vLHB both look to end up in the high 60s/low 70s. It's cool to have a guy who can credibly throw 6000 or more pitches in a year, but if he's not the best option, it obviously doesn't accomplish much in the big picture besides removing the need for RP depth.

He could eat up a lot of innings, but his GB/FB rating worries me. His splits are not good enough to offset that, unless you live in a severe pitcher's park. Be prepared to give up a lot of home runs. Aside from that, you could put him in the back end of a tandem every-other game. But that's a lot of time spent on day to day management.

Bottom line, he could be a really good pitcher for you. But I wouldn't give up your best player for him.

As he is, he's a very back-end pitcher, best used as a mop-up. My guess is that's he's still got a handful of development points left-- he has a 97 makeup and got a DitR 3 seasons ago-- which would move him into an LRB or SuB role. But he's not a top-end guy.

Short version-- he can pitch 300 innings, but you don't want him to. Use him as an ordinary SuB.

Think about what you're looking at. His Control and Pitch Ratings are average. His L/R splits are quite below average. His Overall rating comes almost exclusively from his ability to throw a lot of pitches.

That's kind of where I ended up - his ratings will improve a decent amount still (as a DITR there tends to be larger improvement later) and I think he could end up a solidly average pitcher with a very unique ability to eat truly massive amounts of innings, but that ability isn't a huge deal if he's not better in those innings than the other guys I have.

If his talent level (specifically his splits) were a bit better, he could be a very intriguing piece - an above average guy who can go 4 innings every other game, even if he's not a star. As is (or rather as he likely will be) though, he's just average which means his durability/stamina doesn't have as big an impact.

He is a ml mopup at best. If you have a really good staff he could be used in that role otherwise he is a aaa guy in my opinion. That said if his rating were better id use him as a sa and let him get 250+ innings.

brian, thanks for that example. Was honestly mostly just curious how to use/value that relatively unusual archetype of player and McCorley is probably a better example. Falu's projections line up almost exactly with McCorley's current, but (even accounting that DITRs grow more and continue growth longer), I don't think his splits get up to McCorley, plus I assume that (at 36) McCorley is down from what he once was.

If your team or world lacked starters you could use him a a starter as well or as a tandem the options are really limitless as he could do it all. I picked this guy up for cheap as the previous owner did not want to pay him. FYI his key ratings have not moved.
