Out of curiosity, in Smith, what does it take to qualify for B prestige Notre Dame? Cause A- prestige Alabama coach ain't it.

In your case, I’d say it’s likely tenure, and not success, if you’re not qualified yet. Probably another season at the current school. When you took over Bama, it was at D+, which is quite a bit different than the B level the Irish are at right now.

Ahh. So longevity is a key factor too. I've never moved to a D1 school that wasn't in the D range so wasn't sure what it takes. Thanks.

I'm shocked you don't apply for a B prestige Notre Dame team. Guessing 1 more decently successful season will do it.

Are you talking about longevity at his current school or in D1? Because I always thought that longevity at current school was a factor, but gillispie (I'm pretty sure it was gillispie) once told me that it isn't. It's just your last 10 seasons regardless of how many schools you've coached in that time.

I actually have no idea though.

I don’t think that’s entirely right. Longevity overall is definitely a *stronger* factor, and that may be what was meant, but moving around does affect your qualification as well. He’s got 9 seasons at Bama and 5 seasons at The Citadel. I’m fairly certain 14 D1 seasons total would be fine if they were all at the same school, even just a B prestige at Citadel would probably be enough; but I think the job change within 10 has mucked it up. I’d bet one more decent season has him qualified, especially if Notre Dame drops at all.

My guess is Gil was referring to when 2 coaches apply for the same job, it looks at each coach's resumes the past 10 seasons (or at least it used to work this way). Before 3.0, there was a coach reputation (or maybe it was called loyalty?) rating. This didn't matter much at D3 or D2 but it definitely mattered at D1. When you'd take over a new school you'd automatically move from an A+ to a C-. This prevented you from moving to another D1 job right away. After a season or 2 your reputation/loyalty would get back to A or A+ and you could move jobs again. Oddly enough, all Ivy League schools used to require an A+ in this rating to coach there. I wonder if Notre Dame does as well. Heck, I wonder if the reputation component was done away with when 3.0 rolled out.

Full disclosure-I didn't actually look to see how long the OP has been at Bama but based on the info in the thread I'm guessing he hasn't been there long.

Yeah darnoc, I think you're right now that I recall the specifics of the conversation. That makes sense.

Just to add a few points - the jobs board currently has me at A+ reputation/loyalty (9 seasons at Bama), so I don't think I'm getting a ding for that. It's probably more what Shoe is mentioning. Also, I'm a "longshot", so everyone saying I'm one season away is most likely right.

I'm not mad or anything. I don't particularly want the Notre Dame job. I'm more just trying to figure out the job application process as I plan any next moves.

I just looked at your resume and I have no idea why you aren't qualified for ND-i'm genuinely shocked by this. ND's baseline is a B-something and you've got 4 straight NT appearances, including a S16.

It must be a longevity issue. I qualify with my B- prestige at Arkansas Pine Bluff. I rarely make the 2nd round, been to the S16 once.

@hulnder, I see you have two AR schools - AR State in Tark and UAPB in Smith. Are you from AR by chance?

I just took over at Ozarks (D3) in Tark. I played at Ozarks from '02 to '06. Planning to jump to one of the D2 schools in AR once I can (my dad played at Ouachita Baptist, so might jump there) and then on to one of the D1s. Might join you and coach UALR if you're still at AR State by then!
