Whole team of 95+ Power, nothing else Topic

Curious how a whole team made up of guys who have huge power ratings but nothing else would do. It seems pretty easy to find guys cheap who have 95-ish Power but are in the 30s or worse in other hitting ratings. The type of guys with 45 HRs but hit .210 in the minors. If they each hit 35 HRs in The Show does it matter they hit .195? Joey Gallo types.

Thought about this for a bit. Went looking for any players I have like that; I don't have any. The player generation system doesn't create players completely randomly - it seems to create them to fit certain types. So the very common one you'll find is the classic DH, with high power and batting eye yet low contact and barely acceptable splits.

Generally speaking, that guy's not a position player other than maybe a poor 1B. So if I have a player who's literally power and nothing else, he probably stops getting playing time around High A ball, because I find another minor league DH who's better.

I think every so often you might find a Power-only hitter who can actually play a position as a SS or C... but again, likely they never get a sniff of the majors unless it's as a backup.

Do what ever you want.

Blanco has nice defense and PC but that 90 power is useless on its own IMO.

I'll take the K's to go with the awful contact these guys usually have but I want to see a great eye to go with the power and preferably a vR that's not deplorable.

90+ power on guys that can actually field is a very nice bonus.

I don't know if its similar but I'm currently running a speed team in L.E.G that is putting up surprisingly good record. I wish they wouldn't cuz we are supposed to be tanking, but I don't have the heart to pull the plug on them.

On the occasion I see guys with 90+ power that can legit play SS (85 in all defensive ratings or higher) those guys tend to go top 10 in the draft. Then again if a guy can hit over 200 and be a good defensive SS they usually end up making the majors in the worlds I'm in.

Edit: Sadly I don't think Shawn Shumaker will reach the projections I was talking about, but he projected to be a defensively responsible player with a ton of power. With those numbers I was easily able to ignore the splits and eye. He'll be an AAAA stud for about 10 seasons before he retires.

Guys like this...

Ferrer is one of the weirdest players I've ever seen. I'd be inclined to give him a shot just to see what happens. 90+ in power, speed, and batting eye is nothing to scoff at, but that flat zero in vR might be a killer. It also might not be.

Brian Mori was one of my favorites. A SS who peaked at 91 Range, 90 Glove, 95 Arm Strength, 88 Arm Accuracy, 99 Speed, 88 Power but splits in the 20s and eye in the 30's. In his prime he was good for 25-30 HR, 20-25 SB, AVG.210-.220 and Won 3 Gold Gloves at SS.

I had a guy very similar to Mori. Drafted him as a SS but he only became a power hitting 3B, still won a few GGs. Same batting average. His VsR split was 10, but he had a decent career. Because he could play a position. I can't see filling out an entire lineup with guys like this, because you're going to have to figure out how to deploy so many 1B-caliber gloves. That Ferrer guy above, he's been shoehorned into RF.

Andy Hardy is a guy I just had play the back half of a season as an injury replacement on a team going nowhere. I was never fully decided on whether he'd even make the majors, as you see from three full seasons at AAA. If this thread stays up I'll update his progress next season, but I find it hard to believe he hasn't already overachieved in this first half season.

I gave Calvin Barney a shot as an everyday player a couple seasons back and he was just appallingly bad (.174 OBP). Having seen Mori I'm now wondering if it'd be worth giving him another go.
