i spent dozens of hours once trying to set up player roles (not through HD's player roles, more like these folks who do it in a spread sheet), but decided i was too dumb and moved on. it was a really valuable exercise though. i am not a huge fan of swapping in the judgement of a spread sheet for the eye test, when it comes to final judgement, but its a great way to cut through the noise. and also debating the player role values against yourself is a really good way to clarify how you weigh things, and to elevate ambiguity which you can later explore. fantastic exercise, truly.
it really helps drive forward the mental process breaking up of the game's central question / driver of success (what makes players and teams great?) into smaller, more digestible pieces. especially if you go for things like offensive and defensive scores as intermediates or just alternate totals.
