“I've also heard from a coach with a lot of knowledge in this game that you actually get a credit boost if you offer the ship AFTER (or "with") the promises. Rather than offering the ship before. That's one I never knew about. The only problem with that, is often times if you're first to get the ship in, some coaches will back off and look for other recruits instead. So waiting more cycles for everything to unlock first "could" backfire in the end.”
I know lots of folks assume preferences affect the value of a scholarship, though I don’t think this has ever been confirmed by WIS. It’s important to note a couple things here I think. First of all, I think doggg knows this, but as with the first paragraph, even if we assume preferences do affect the value of scholarships, promises only matter (in that way) for players with the wants to play preference. So for other players, waiting has no direct impact on the value of effort.
The other thing is that the real positive impact is smaller than most people think, because they forget what they give up. First, they are losing at least one cycle, possibly multiple, of AP which would otherwise be accumulating that preference benefit, but isn’t, because they’re holding back. That’s because offering a scholarship is worth a lot of AP, and thus covers a lot of the initial AP investment required to make promises. And then strategically waiting even one cycle is sometimes the difference between having to battle for a guy, and never seeing a real battle materialize.
IMO, the best reason to wait on a scholarship offer is when tactically you want to come from behind on a guy that a front runner may end up skimping on. It’s a risk, because that front runner may be investing anyway, but if they don’t see anyone coming, they may get greedy and try to put their resources elsewhere. In those cases, holding off on scholarship until when you offer the promises and the visits all at once makes a lot of sense, especially if you are punching up on prestige.
