I love drafts. There is lots of strategy trying to pick the best team while also trying to figure out what your opponents are doing. The "1-pick-per-day" drafts are ok, but getting to pick 3, 5 or even 10 players in a day is way better. Thus the "Quick Drafts" concept was born. A few months ago, I ran a Quick Drafts tournament without a salary cap. This tournament is going to be different. Before I get into the specifics, do NOT sign up for this if you are not able to check in multiple times throughout the day. Nothing ruins the fun of a draft more than when somebody doesn't make his pick in a timely matter.
Tournament Details
This is a 2-round tournament. The first round will consist of 3 leagues (72 teams). All 8 playoff teams from each of the 3 leagues will advance to the second round. Round 1 will consist of 18 separate 4-person drafts (6 per league). Since this theme has a $100 million salary cap, the draft will be serpentine and the draft order will be determined randomly. With a relatively low cap, picking first isn't necessarily an advantage (since studs like '04 Bonds or '94 Maddux may be too costly for this cap level). The 24 teams advancing to round 2 will take part in another 4-person draft, so the roster you drafted in round 1 won't be the same roster you use in round 2.
Round 1 Details
Seasons 1931-2020 will be used, 30 years per league and 5-years per division. Example: League 1 will include the years 1931-1960 where one group of 4 owners will be drafting from seasons 1931-1935 (and be placed into the same division), a different group of 4 owners will be drafting from seasons 1936-1940, etc. Similarly, League 2 will include the years 1961-1990 and League 3 will include the years 1991-2020. So that's eighteen 5-year drafting groups. In order to allow as many people as possible to participate in this tournament, please keep it to one entry per league for now (so 3 total). One more key drafting detail. There are 5 seasons in each drafting group. You must roster exactly 5 players from each season. You do not have to announce which season of a player you are using during the draft.
Round 2 Details
The 8 playoff teams from each league (24 teams total) will advance to round 2. More specifically, the four playoff teams from League 1 NL (1931-1945) will be in the same drafting group and same division (i.e., NL East) for Round 2. These four teams will draft from the 1931-45 season, and the draft order (serpentine) will be based on their round 1 playoff seeding. The salary cap for Round 2 will be $110 million. Since there are 15 seasons and you have to draft 25 players, each season must be represented once and no season can be represented more than twice on your roster.
Other Specifics (for both Rounds 1-2)
DH: No
Clones: No
AAA: No
WW: No
Injuries: Yes
Ballpark: Will be drafted (Must be a park that was in use during your season range).
So who is the best drafter? Even if you build a juggernaut in Round 1, can you do it again in round 2, against tougher competition?
Prize: Will try to get admin to donate something.
