Development and Coaching? Topic

How important is coaching to you in the development of your minor league players? For instance, let's focus on Pitching Coaches, I've pulled up all the coaches to see where mine fall to get a feel for how good they are.

AAA - my PC is near the top of the list (sorted by the pitching attribute)
AA - my PC is near the bottom of the list
Hi-A - my PC is near the top of the list, in fact he has a higher Pitching attribute than my AA coach. Yuck.

I have some pitchers in AA who probably project as fringe guys and who I probably need to squeeze as many points out of as possible. Is it worth the risk to send them back to Hi-A to spend the season with the better coach? I'm still in ST is it possible I'll get the dreaded Demotion bump if I send them down now? I'd really rather not speed them all thru to AAA a year early (in my opinion) but am interested if there's any prevailing wisdom.

The short answer is you want players to be with the better coaches, regardless of where the coaches rank at that level. In other words, if your AAA pitching coach has 75 pitching IQ rating, your AA pitching coach 67 and your HIgh-A 60, you would want AA pitchers to be with the AA coach rather than the High-A coach because of the rating.

When hiring coaches, take into account the patience and discipline ratings. Patience helps with coaching younger players, while discipline is for the older players. So you would want coaches with good patience in the minors and good discipline in the majors.

If memory serves, you can demote them after ST ends but before the season starts and you won’t get the demotion penalty.

Thanks guys, I particularly appreciate the discipline/patience info from Drummer. I've never paid much attention to those ratings, and it sounds like I should be.

A good strat is to see what type of players you have in each level. If you have a mix of pitching and hitting true prospects at a level, get a good mix of both in your bench coach. However, if all your true prospects at the level are pitchers, then hire a bench coach that has high pitching ratings. Or obviously vice versa.
