Does anyone know if speed is the only factor in the likelihood of a bunt hit? And what factors are considered in a successful sacrifice bunt? The speed of the runner being advanced of course - but does the sim consider sacrifice bunt success in history - because in reality the skill of successfully laying down a good bunt is more than speed alone.

I am not trying to make a bunting team, although that would be really cool in a very small cap league - but I have a few laggard players on a team of mine - and their RL stats don't make me think they were big bunters - but trying to decide whether to move their bunt tendencies to a 5 - because otherwise the bottom third of my lineup is offensive deadweight.

The sim does not take into account bunting prowess, actual runs batted in, clutch hitting, hitting with the bases loaded history, how well they block pitches in the dirt, or their ability to hit the cutoff man.

Carew won't be far better here at bunting like he was in real life. Jeter won't get credit for his flip to the catcher, and Edmonds or Ozzie won't get extra range for how well they saw the ball off the bat, or for seeing a pitcher's tell from the dugout.

Thanks Doc, So the Sim won't consider contact rate, or actual # or % of succesful bunts in rl? So all batters have the same bunt success rate, and speed/ opponent fielding is only factors for successful bunt hits and speed of runner on base is only factor in successful sac bunts?

It would seem so. Sad!

Jeter also won't get adulated for hitting a "clutch home run" to Jeffrey Maier...

I think for sac bunts the sim does consider how many sac bunts the guy had IRL, I'm not 100 percent sure because I never sac bunt with anyone besides the pitcher but if I were betting I would say not everyone is exactly the same.

Speed is definitely a factor as well, you sometimes see pitchers sac bunt and it ends up a double play, I would be shocked if you'd ever see a guy with 95+ speed do that

If so, who even keeps track of bunts vs attempts? They distinguish between sacrifice attempts vs trying to bunt for a hit? Seems kind of thin...

thanks guys!

The original question was whether speed is the only factor of the likelihood of a bunt hit. I don't think anyone answered that.

I don't know with certainty, but speed is probably combined with a hitters 1B/100 to determine the percentage of singles that are infield hits, and a subsection that are bunt hits. My bunt setting is always 0, but my guys get bunt hits anyway, seemingly in proportion to their speed and lack of power.

I'm fairly certain the bunt setting adjusts the frequency of sacrifice bunts, and wouldn't impact the percentage of hits that are bunts. If someone reaches base after they attempted to sacrifice, it would be from a fielder error or minus play. The minus play would be recorded as a hit, but that would be rare.
