Difference between Tandem 1A/1B and starter 1A/1B Topic

What’s the difference between the pitcher rolls Tandem 1A/1B etc vs Starter 1A/1B etc? And what does each mean?

Let’s say you have a 500 IP pitcher and two 200 IP pitchers for your rotation.

You could have a Starter 1, Starter 2A, and Starter 2B which would like like:

Game 1: Starter 1
Game 2: Starter 2A
Game 3: Starter 1
Game 4: Starter 2B

or if you use the tandem role which would look like:

Game 1: Starter 1
Game 2: Tandem 2A starts, and Tandem 2B comes in after him
Game 3: Starter 1
Game 4: Tandem 2A starts, Tandem 2B relieves him.

D_rock is correct.

Basically use Tandem if you want to try an opener type strategy, use Starter if you want a more traditional innings setup where you don't want an equal number of starts amongst your starters.

Perfect. Thanks for the help.

Ok. Tell me if this is stupid or not. I like experimenting different strategies just to see what happens. I’m in a $255 million theme league which is almost infinite money to play around with so I thought I’d try making a platoon team. Platoon hitting is pretty normal, but I’ve never heard about platoon pitching.

How weird an idea is it to have a rotation of platoon pitchers? Like start the game with a righty to get your opponents right hand pitcher lineup but then switch to a lefty after a few innings just to mess with their lineups? Would it even make a difference? Is it a waste of effort? I’m curious to find out.

its not a bad idea at all, particularly in a league where you expect other owners to have lots of platoons. at that cap, I wouldn't expect many other owners to be running platoons, but you'll get a slight edge if they are.

I use the platoon quite a bit. You can use any combo of innings, and the new 20 pitch minimum for starters gives us many ways to use the tandem. A great way to think outside the box.

A Great learning tool for managing pitch counts...

Using RHP/LHP tandems can be a very effective strategy.
