why the D's for there defense.

Did anyone watch these guys play. Parker could throw someone out at the wall tagging from 3rd.

'77 Parker made 15 errors, .965 fld pct. That computes to D+ here.

Yaz played 140 error free games as an OF that season, is an A+.

I'm with you, both could make great plays. You'll see Lou Brock with terrible range numbers here, and the stats back it up. Most stats here ARE accurate.

And this is an algorithm, math, not baseball...Nostalgia doesn't matter here...a bunch of no-names can whip all stars and HOF players. It's all in the numbers...

Parker has an A for range that year, so he will negate at least some of his errors with getting some + plays, so he's still quite capable here...the '21 Max Carey is a C- glove, but a 3.30 range number means he's a ballhawk with A+ range, a real commodity. He will get to a lot of would be hits...

As a newcomer I highly recommend you read the FAQ simleague forums, and the Advice for Newbie threads to see what matters here. Lots of useful information for helping you get a grasp on how to play this...

I miss the days when nostalgia actually mattered.

So do I...

This is a good game, and Admin is in the process of rewriting what is currently running on 1990's technology, very outdated software, so fairly soon it will finally get a much needed facelift.

LOL, that's a good one.

I grew up watching Clemente play in Pittsburgh. RF was only 300 ft in old Forbes Field but this is misleading as there was also a very high screen in RF. What looked like a HR off the bat was only a single with Clemente playing RF. Clemente was a master at playing a ball off that screen with a runner on 1B, or with a batter assuming he had a double, by turning and throwing a strike into 2B or 3B. After awhile everyone learned not to stretch it on Clemente. He won 12 straight Gold Glove awards in one stretch. But, he doesn't get his due here in WIS for some reason. His stats must also be misleading to his relative greatness to other players of that era. But, he was one of the best to play in the 50s and 60s before he died too young in 72 in a plane crash.

Not saying Clemente wasn't a great player, he definitely was especially in his day, but let's remember the way we evaluate players has greatly changed in the 50 years since he played.

High average/low walk guys are no longer viewed all that favorably, his main thing was batting average, but many people don't even look at that anymore and see it as a somewhat useless standalone stat.
As for his defense rating, that's purely a numbers game. His real life fielding % and range factor are what they are.

his career WAR of 95 seems to indicate he would be viewed as a stud in any era

he had a career OPS+ of 130, you're making him sound like he was an Ichiro-style slap hitter

Clemente would have easily been one top 4 or 5 players of his era. Defensively his arm was maybe the best of anybody of that era.

Irony can be pretty ironic sometimes.

Length of throw is not a factor in the Sim.

Sadly, the FAQ and Advice for Newbies threads have been gutted and are mostly worthless now.

Certainly taking nothing away fro Clemente and his arm, but Kaline, who we all know played simultaneously with Roberto, had a great arm too. I don’t see him mentioned in the same way Clemente is for his defense. He really should be. Al is very underrated historically

I read an article a few years back ranking the best OF arms of all time. Kaline was ranked in the top 10 and the comment I remember the most was his ability to get to a ball in position in order to catch and throw quickly. Others I remember towards the top of the list were Colavito, Mantle, Mays, Dewey Evans, Ichiro, Jesse Barfield, and Ellis Valentine. Clemente was ranked #1.

Of course, rankings are often subjective.
