How do you handle low WE players? Topic

I just took over a new D3 team in Rupp. On the roster is a player who has good potential to be a pretty solid PG (90+ in SPD, BH, PAS, and PER), but also has an atrocious WE (5!!!). The player has poor athleticism and defense and I wouldn't want him anywhere near the starting lineup as a freshman. The issue with the player is that, while he has good potential, I worry that his low WE will mean he never actually improves - especially if I don't give him any playing time to help improve the WE.

Here are his stats for reference:
Type A SPD REB DE BLK LP PE BH P WE ST DU FT OVR
Current 30 70 14 18 9 15 40 67 76 5 70 48 C- 47.6

From my experience, he has almost no chance of fulfilling his potential in four years, probably not even five with a red shirt.

Nope not worth it with that low of WE. Cut his ***

He won't improve much overall. You can pick 3 cores - I would forget perimeter - and drop everything else to maintenance only, which is 3-4 for per, 6-7 for everything else (0 out the things that aren't essential for guard of course, rebounding, LP, and anything that's already yellow/red), and over the course of his career, he might improve 10-15 points in those 3 areas of green. Keeping in mind he'll also backtrack between seasons. He's not good enough to start without hurting the team if you want to be a championship caliber team, but you're not there yet, so you could theoretically increase his WE up to like 10-11 by the time he's a senior. He probably won't get to 90 in those categories, but low 80s is realistic, and that's pretty decent.

Is it worth it? Well do you have better options readily available, is your primary question. How easy will it be for you, with the resources you have, as an A- D3 team, to score a PG who will be meaningfully better? He's probably the best pure distributing PG on your team this season, IQ aside. Certainly for next season. So I wouldn't be too hasty to cut him until I had lined up a sure thing in recruiting for next year. Would he be "on the chopping block" for me? Yes. Every season, probably. But there's also a good chance that he sticks all 4 years, because that's just how recruiting at D3 is sometimes. Plans fall through. He isn't terrible, and your team isn't great.

I'm willing to take on work ethic in the teens if they're freshmen and I know I'm going to start them for 4 seasons. I guess I'd consider a juco if they're already really good.

My first season ever I recruited a 17 WE. 4 years later, he only marginally progressed with still significant room to grow. Some might say low WE will develop if you play them regularly. However, after that first recruit I vowed to never sign a recruit with a WE under 20 unless they were special or a more fully developed Juco transfer.
