I have a type D pick at #18 in the first round of the upcoming draft because my pick last year didn't sign. (It was the #16 pick in last season's draft.) If I sign a Type A free agent this year, will I lose that pick since it is after #16, keep it since it is a compensation for not signing last year's pick, or what?

No, you don't lose compensation picks. You will lose your next pick though as long as it is not another comp pick.
