Experienced, reliable owner needed (waitlist) Topic

The No Whining Progressive - Random Edition is about 60 games into 1923 and we will need one new owner for our upcoming 1924 season. This is only the 3rd time in our history that we have posted an ad for a replacement owner. The last time was more than a year ago. Most of us have been with the league since its 1901 inception, and the handful of replacements we have needed have all been sourced by word of mouth. So this is a rare opportunity to join a unique league that you might not see advertised again for years.

We are only looking for experienced, reliable progressive owners. This is not a league for progressive newbies. Similarly, if you have had trouble in the past meeting deadlines, keeping up with drafts, etc., this is not the league for you. We run the league very efficiently and have no patience for owners who can't keep up.

What makes the NWP-RE unique?
-- We use a contract point system that effectively serves as a salary cap. Each team has 90 contract points to allocate across a 33-man roster. One contract point equates to one season. Contracts are iron clad and cannot be changed. Once you sign a player to a contract, you are on the hook for his contract points, even if you cut him. If a player is traded, his contract points go with him.
-- Since you obviously can't sign all of your players to long-term deals, that means that each season we have a regular influx of good mid-career players in the draft. For example, Tris Speaker was the 4th overall pick in the 1923 draft. When was the last time you saw THAT happen?
-- Additionally, each season every player on every team is assigned a random year from the database that could be plus-or-minus two seasons from the one we are actually playing. So for the upcoming 1924 season, you will be using the 1922 version of some players, along with 1923, 1924, 1925, and 1926. If your player draws a season when he is ineligible, those are the breaks. Just like a real life MLB team might unexpectedly lose a player to injury or suspension.
-- We allow owners to draft players up to two seasons before they enter the SLB database. In our league, for example, Lou Gehrig and Lefty Grove were the top 2 picks in 1923, not in 1925 as in most other progressives.
-- Similarly, you can keep players up to two seasons after they "retire" from SLB.
-- Each season we draw a completely random draft order. Yes, this means the world series winner might get the #1 overall pick.
-- Putting all of the above together, our annual drafts do not look anything like other drafts you may have participated in. Resources like crazystengel's progressive draft database still have marginal utility, but you will need to do your homework every season to adequately prepare for the draft.
-- Our trades are also very different. You're not just trading a player, you're trading his contract. It's very common each season for star players with 1 season remaining on their contract to be traded to a contender, much like real MLB. And each owner puts different values on how much next season's first round pick is worth, especially because you won't know until the draft starts where that pick will fall.

Our available team is an NL club currently based in Brooklyn. You could move the team to NY (Polo Grounds V) or CHI (Cubs Park) if you so choose. This is a one-time only option that you can only choose to exercise in your first season; we do not allow existing owners to change cities.

I won't list the full roster here, because I am looking for owners who want to join THIS LEAGUE as opposed to specifically wanting to take over THIS TEAM. But I will tell you that the club's roster is shaping up to be competitive for 1924 and beyond, with a number of hall of famers under contract. Subject of course to the outcome of the random season assignment for each player.

If anyone is interested, I will add you to our league forum, where you will be able to see the roster along with complete rules and league history.

We have at least one owner who has expressed interest. If anyone else would like to be added to the waitlist, please let me know.

I am curious and would like to be considered for this league. One question. It makes sense to draft Gehrig in 1923 and wait for his career to begin, but what is the strategy in keeping a player for 2 seasons after he retires?

I will add you to the waitlist...

The short answer re: keeping a player after he retires is that the random season assignment means you might still be able to use him.

Let's take Sandy Koufax as an example. His last season (and an awesome season it was!) was 1966. In a regular prog, he retires after 1966 and that's that. But in our league, in 1967 there is still a decent chance that he can be used - because in 1967 the random season assignment for each player could be anything from 1965-69. And in 1968, there is still a small chance that Koufax can be used, because in 1968 the random season might be anything from 1966-1970. So, in principle, if you have Koufax on your roster, you could sign him through 1968.
