AN OF playing 3b Topic

I know I ask this question all the time but I can't find the thread and I just can't remember.

If I have an A+ OF with 1.000 FLD% he'll play like a B- fielding at 3b?

I believe it is a 5% hit for playing OOP, then a 2% for each move left on the spectrum. If I recall, the WIS spectrum is different than the Bill James spectrum and goes SS-3B-2B-OF-1B-DH (James reverses 3B&2B) and C is special, but realistically somewhere between SS-3B.

so, give your 1.000 FLD a 5% hit, then two 2% hits, and map that to the new position for the season to get an approximate grade. So, roughly a .912% or D at 3B.

For a two position shift left, in experience, look at the 2025 Ohtani PH. This is a DH shifting to OF, goes from roughly .820 FLD as a DH to .738 as an OF.

Best example I could find in a short screening was 2008 Ryan Braun whose PH shows his 1.000FLD OF translating over a small 4-game sample at 3B where he posted a .938%

anytime you're moving a player the wrong way on the defensive spectrum, they're going to be very poor fielders. you can get away with it when putting a good fielding first baseman at corner outfield (i remember a progressive where I had Pujols and Teixeira and did this) but besides that it's typically going to go poorly for you, and even in that case Teixeria was I think an A-/A first baseman and wasn't good in right field so i was losing some of his value.
