The 16 team, long-running (over 90 seasons) Real Life Progressive League is looking for a replacement owner for the 1959 St. Louis Cardinals. As of this posting, we are at game 100, and will be starting off the clock at game 120 (around 1 June). The Cardinals, with 20 games to go to 120, are currently forecast to get between the 5th and 7th overall pick in what is an excellent draft, with seven players having a WAR over 30! This team is in a rebuild, but there are six players with a WAR over 30 in 1960 and eight in 1961.
We restarted the 3rd iteration of the Real Life League in the 1946 season, with owners getting the exact team that year, so, thirteen years later, the Cardinals retain few actual Cards, but you have a few more years of Stan the Man! Plus, he will still be great for your team in retirement, inspiring the youth....
This progressive league, which has 16 teams divided into four divisions, is like most, except that any player who started his real (not just WIS) career in a season is available to be drafted that season in the first round. In other words, for this upcoming 1959 draft, which is one of the most loaded with prospects ever, besides WIS rookies like Bob Gibson and Willie McCovey, the following can be drafted: P Jim Kaat (45.2 WAR), P Jim Perry (38.5), P Chris Short (31.4), P Mike Cuellar (29.2), P Earl Wilson (27.6), OF Billy Williams (63.7) and C Tim McCarver (28.3). They are available in the first round despite not playing in WIS in 1959 -- and four of the 16 teams can't draft a prospect, since you can only retain one on your team! These prospects (we keep a separate draft list to make it easy) join any players you have on the DL/IR until they are WIS eligible. If you select a prospect in the first round, you can pick up your 25th player in the supplemental draft round, which occurs after the normal draft is finished. The rest is pretty standard, with 8 AAA that you select from a list of pre-1946 players or whoever remains unclaimed from 1957. However, we have been around for over 90 seasons, and the rules are very detailed to prevent tanking, and to keep things close to real life, such as that no players may drop below 75% fatigue, pure relievers can't start games, players can only play their position or less capable positions (so only a SS can play SS, or he can play any other position besides C, while a 2B can't play SS or C, etc.). When we do have openings, it's usually because a relatively new owner, not in his/her first season, dropped below 75% fatigue and was automatically penalized in the 1st round of the next draft, and despite the clear rule on that, he/she thinks the rule is outrageous and chooses to leave! But other than that, we have a great group of long-term owners in this 16 team league, with lots of friendly banter and plenty of trades.
If you are new to progressives, I ask that you commit to a few seasons, and I'm happy to provide you all the guidance you will need.
