I have had conflicting information about playing a player in their secondary role. ie playing a short stop at 3rd.

Is there a defense penalty for playing a player down in to their secondary role? and can this be overcome by changing the primary to the lower defensive position. I know this could affect the players development.

Not that I am aware of. Just make sure you have that position clicked on the defensive card. If you don't have that position clicked, then there is a penalty. Clicking the box is like you giving permission (through the sim's eyes) for the player to play that position.
