Wow. I've got a ton of money for just having to fill two scholarships. While I hope to avoid any battles, I feel confident that I'll win for the two guys I want.

I'm torn about the issue of Duke versus Jordan. I'll start Jordan for now and see what sort of FG and 3pt% he gets in the preseason. If it's along the same lines as Duke last year, I think Jordan gets the nod, due to his huge advantage in rebounding, over Duke. If he's not the same level of scorer that Duke has been the last two years, due to the difference in athleticism, Duke gets the start. I don't want Fanelli to be a primary option for scoring, because I want him back next year. That means that the offense has to basically go through my SG, Thompson at SF, and Byrd at C (or PF, depending on the matchup). Duke has been a great shooter, but it seems like people may have caught up, so he could be better as a guy off of the bench with a high distribution who could come in and wreak havoc in short bursts. He doesn't really have the well-rounded game...though I guess his steals are pretty good. I dunno. The preseason is going to determine a lot. It's a nice problem to have, especially as a low-to-mid DI school: too much talent.

nah, Duke has earned the starting position with his production the two last seasons. He's a proven commodity, too. Jordan will get plenty of time, but Duke is a great shooter, and I need a great shooter to keep Fanelli from scoring too much and going pro early. Plus Duke was very good at assists last year. He's not one-dimensional.
On the other hand, he would be a great spark guy off of the bench.
I really don't know. I'll post the preseason games when I get there and I'll decide during that time.
Or perhaps I'll ask in the main forum what people think. I bet they'll say Duke.
[edit, a few hours later:] They did.

I've got the two guys I targeted to myself for now. I think my success should scare off any mid-to-mid-major teams that might think about these guys, and no major will want them. I've got a ton of money , too, to fight anyone off. I think I've got 'em sewn up.
The SF I was looking at if Hall transferred has been picked up by a Sim team. I would've been able to fight them off if I wanted to.

okay, well, I took down most of that thread after Rails told me I was being unsportsmanlike. I will say in this thread, since it's buried and only the people who look for it will see this, that the coach of [X] decided to go after a guy I had considering me alone for a few cycles, who was totally local to me, and [coach of X] had three other recruits...two of which are nice enough that they shouldn't be going to a [X conference] team. I wanted to change the dynamic of our battle by forcing him to spend money elsewhere, so I pointed out that one of his recruits, in particular, would make a fabulous redshirt for just about any DI team. I also highlighted the other guy, who will develop into a nice SG for a zone team. I preferred my recruit over his big man, mostly due to FT%. That was a judgment call I made last year, when I was scouting out guys. He was on my list, though, in the Medium area.
The only guys who could've gotten me to take down that thread were Rails and oldresorter. I still hope that someone starts a battle with [X] over 'em sooner rather than later, so I can rest easy that I have the recruit to myself in the long term.
In the meantime, I knocked him off of my guy's considering list. I was mildly incensed that a low DI coach (good evaluator of talent though he may be) would challenge a coach who made the Final Four last year. But really, this one didn't have to do with being angry so much as trying to change the equation to assure victory. Plus I guess I wouldn't mind seeing a decent coach other than myself getting kicked around in recruiting for a year due to overreaching. At least since he saw fit to challenge me.
If they won't love me (and show it by leaving my recruits alone) I'd like to be feared (they'd show it by leaving my recruits alone). I want a reputation as someone to watch out for in recruiting.
In the real world, when I was a kid, I didn't get picked on because bullies knew I was perfectly willing to fight dirty. That said, I respect the hell out of Rails, and his respect for me matters more than some recruit. I'll probably win the battle, anyways.

Okay, it was wrong of me. I can be an @sshole at times.

...

but it would be best if anyone who reads this refrains from f&^king with me, during recruiting, if just for the sake of avoiding dealing with me as I throw manners out the window for half a day or longer. Recruiting seems to bring the worst out of me. Normally, I consider myself to be assertive instead of aggressive, but there are things that can set me off in the other direction.
What was it Bruce Banner used to say? "You wouldn't like me when I'm angry." Yeah, I can be a real dick. I don't get angry much in the real world. When I do, though, I turn nasty against the person who made me mad, for a while. A slow, intense burn.
That said, the coach of [X] didn't deserve my anger. Recruiting, man. I hate losing a guy in recruiting, and I hate seeing a smaller program going after someone I had to myself. It feels like someone's jabbing a thumb at my eye or something...feels like disrespect for what I've done so far. I'd have understood it last year or the year before, and certainly understood it a few years ago when I lost 5 out of my top 6 targets.
I think he was getting the echoes of my bitterness from last season's recruiting in Crum, when a guy who I'd sort of taken under my wing decided to challenge me when I was vulnerable on an international guy. I had to play a walk-on as a backup PG for the entire year, and as I said in my Crum tracking thread, "I figure I owe maxfischer three lost recruits: 1) for the guy he took from me; 2) for the personal betrayal; 3) for choosing to recruit against a Big Ten team, from a low-level C-USA job. Rather, either three lost recruits or three years without any four-star players. Maybe four years. Maybe for as long as he's at UTEP."
In terms of my dealings with maxfischer, in Crum, I retract nothing and regret only my own mistakes in recruiting last year. He will get what's coming to him.

Geez, CB. You're scaring me! LOL
Kidding aside, I appreciate the respect. Let it go though, man. You're going to have a heart attack. And if you don't have one, I'm going to have one.
(please dont go after that one good recruit in crum that I plan on recruiting. I won't have access until after about a day into recruiting and I dont want to get on your bad side.)

ah, part of this is just that I like writing out stuff, Rails. I never kept a journal or anything, and I'm a bit of an egomaniac, so laying stuff out when I know people are reading is a trip for me. I now get the blogging phenomenon a lot more than I used to.
8/16/2007 2:23 AM
I enjoy reading them. You do a nice job.
8/16/2007 2:26 AM
you really ought to do one of your own. It wouldn't have to be as detailed as mine, could be more like OR's one in Tark, where you'd mostly answer questions about how you go about doing things. Of course, I suppose if everyone got better because of it that might end your stunning record of dominance, but personally I think the quest for new knowledge is more fun than the winning itself.
Of course, that sentiment has to be taken with a grain of salt, considering.
Anyways, moving on. Signings start at 8 PM. I hope I can just post my new guys then.
8/16/2007 3:21 AM
assuming, at this point, that I sign my two targets at 8:00, my needs for next season's recruiting are:
SG to play
SF to redshirt
best available athlete to sit, probably a big man
I hope Fanelli stays and I don't find I need a PG. I really, really hope I don't have Fanelli and Giles both defecting at the same time. If that happens, I will absolutely have to abandon the program for greener pastures, immediately. Not that it would be in horrible shape, but we certainly wouldn't be contending next year, which is something I want to accomplish for the remainder of my time at Fordham.
[edit, 8/22/07:] I might instead go with an SG to redshirt, an SF to play backup SG, and a big man to sit. Or a big man to redshirt, and an SG and SF, one of which would sit, probably dictated by what promises I have to hand out during recruiting if I get into a battle, or who has the higher work ethic (lower ones play for me earlier, generally).

Well, now that I've safely landed the three recruits in question...Just wanted to publicly state that as the infamous "coach of x" I hold no ill will towards colorblind. We have since talked via sitemail and he seems to be a stand up kinda guy. And hey...I'm kind of flattered that you think two of my guys shouldn't be going to a school like mine. To have landed them without gifts or promises...makes me feel like I'm definitely doing something right in this recruiting thing.

Congrats on getting your two guys. Can't wait for our match up next season.

thanks cyben. Again, my bad, and congratulations on pulling in those guys. They really will make your team very competetive in the long run. I was going to check in on whether you got them, and comment on it etc. I'm glad I didn't cause you any real harm during my hissy fit. See you next season.
