Rule V Leg #32 Draft Thread Topic

I do love him at $80M

McGee usually does better than that in Rule V. I see .843, .786, .793 OPS the three seasons before this most recent one.

I'm going to take the Red Sox off the board with Rico Petrocelli, BOS.

Rico wouldn't have gotten past me if he was still there.  Well played, sir.

Rico = frequent Rule V gold

You mean MVP Zoilo Versailles?  Say it ain't so!  That's some bad Twin City karma there.

Unfortunately, his MVP season was 1965, so it's not Rule V eligible.  Besides that, one of the most undeserving MVP awards ever given, IMHO.

EDIT: I'm going to backtrack on that last statement...looks like his defense was outstanding that season and a lot of pop for a SS.  Baseball Reference actually has him first in WAR for the AL in 1965.  I stand corrected.

there was a pretty interesting digression in Bill James' NHBA (I think) about the Versalles MVP, where he writes about how at first he thought it was an awful choice, but then looked at it closer and concluded that it was actually a decent choice after all. Versalles actually leads the 1965 AL in WAR, per baseball-ref. you want a really awful MVP shortstop. 1944 Marty Marion is the way to go.

as far as karma goes, I think she'll forgive me for not drafting Versalles since he's not even eligible ;) (I was thinking Leo Cardenas but typed Versalles for some reason...)

"[Versalles] actually wasn't a bad MVP pick; I think Tony Oliva probably should have won the award, but Versalles did have a hell of a year. There have certainly been a lot of players who won MVP Awards with seasons nowhere near as good." –James

actually, it seems to be Rob Neyer's Big Book of Baseball Lineups that I'm remembering. "I figured [Versalles] was just another of the BBWAA's many idiosyncratic choices. But now that I've actually looked at him..." etc.

Sorry for the wait guys,

Fred Lynn, Bos
absolutely shocked Lynn lasted this long. was hoping against hope he'd fall to me. nice pick Robin.
I have to say I was shocked myself, and probably quadruple checked before posting that pick.  Hopefully he will play up to his level.

I have spoonfed's proxy.
5/5/2011 4:54 PM
I will be away starting at 7:00 PM.  I was hoping we'd stay ahead of schedule, but now it looks as though I'll be using a proxy for my 8:30.  I'll probably send to sinfonian11 after he makes his pick at 6:30.

Damn you Shaybee, I wanted McGee.  Let's go a different route and raid a division foe.  Need left handed pitching.  Billy Wagner - Astros
5/5/2011 5:24 PM
I'll be picking shortly, but will then be incommunicado for the next few hours with work.  Anyone else available to take sgsmith's proxy this evening?
