The people that I know in college hoops (assistant coaches, agents, writers, etc.) have basically all told me that Cal is as dirty as they come.

I know that will be an incredible shock to UK fans. I'm sorry.
there's some interesting stuff floating around about Kentucky recruit Nerlens Noel and a "mentor" named Errol Randolph.

Not intending to interrupt over the thread, but isn't your Wisconsin football program the 3rd most penalized in history, behind SMU and Arizona St? And that doesn't even include the moral issues, like goping male students by an asst. athletic director.  Nor A,D, Alvarez's fun with cheerleaders.
1. Source?
2. Anything you might be referring to is minor. To even think to compare it to Cal's ridiculousness in itself compromises your credibility.

(The recent ***'t AD thing is bad and embarrassing. But that's a rogue idiot and has nothing to do with actual corruption within a program.)
  1. Source...NCAA

Since the NCAA started handing out probations in 1953, Wisconsin's football team has been on probation a whopping 15.5% of the seasons played.

  2. Seven Major Infractions: Just months after its basketball program reached the Final Four in 2000, the Wisconsin athletic department was embroiled in controversy. Twenty-six football players were suspended prior to the season opener after the NCAA uncovered that members of the Badgers’ football and basketball teams were given special credit arrangements at a shoe store. A year later, Wisconsin began serving five years of probation, which included scholarship reductions in both football and basketball, for giving recruiting inducements and extra benefits and its overall failure to properly monitor its athletic program.
*The 26 suspended football players had to sit out 1-4 games, depending on their crimes. BUT, Wisconsin got to choose which games they missed.  What do you think...Ohio State? Michigan?    Nope, most of them missed the big rivalry games with Western Michigan and Northwestern.  So, essentially, the school told them, "Gee, we're sorry you got caught but (wink, wink) we've got your back."

'Minor', you say? "Recruiting inducements.....extra benefits....scholarship reductions..."

Kentucky's had worse, mind you. They lost an entire season in 1954 due to point shaving.   But I didn't hijack this thread with "somebody told me" unsubstantiated rumors.

Errol Randolph is a proud Syracuse fan. The Orange were in Noel's final three, along with Kentucky and Georgetown.

I'm not a real Wisconsin fan but the NCAA dictated that the players sit one of the first 4 games played that season.  Ohio State and Michigan not being in the first four games.  Nice spin attempt though.

Alledgedly it was fairly common for the store owner to give 20% discounts to members of teams.  Although when you see some of the Badger players had received over $500 in discounts, it's hard to believe the discount wasn't a bit larger for some.

That Shoebox scandal really grew beyond just the discounts the Wisconsin players received.   Among those discounts given, many were given to players of dozens of local high schools which was in violation of the high school rules as well.  The high school investigation became so widespread that it almost was impossible to lay down punishments without affecting the majority of players for entire conferences.

plate, if the worst you have is the Shoebox thing, I'm totally comfortable with that. It wasn't great, but that's not major, nor is it remotely indicative of an out-of-control program or anything even remotely approaching that. Gimme a break.

(And FWIW, I was the sports editor and then EIC of the paper just a bit before all that broke, so I do have a pretty good perspective on it ...)

If you think what you wrote there somehow puts us in the crooked category, you're delusional.

Larry Brown would be a bad choice for for SMU...surely they can do better.

If nothing else, it's very difficult for a 71-year old to recruit well since it's less certain that he'll stay for the full four years. And, with Larry Brown, he may not even stay 4 months.

I just saw the Larry Brown news too. So confusing, didn't everyone see Isiah Thomas go up in flames at FIU?

Brown has two things working against him: age, and history of job-jumping. Who says the first NBA team to come knocking, he doesn't leave? And he's 71. I'm 21. I ain't playing for my grandfather.

SMU

SMU has apparently narrowed their search to two....Larry Brown and Marquette assistant Tony Benford

TENNESSEE STATE

Tennessee State has elevated assistant Travis Williams to the head coaching position.

In 2004, Williams received his first head coach appointment at Fort Valley State University in Georgia. He led the Wildcats to a pair of winning seasons during his tenure.

He then served  as head coach of the Dongguan Parklane Snow Wolf Professional Basketball Club in China's National Basketball League (NBL).  Williams was hired by the Dongguan Snow Wolf to develop the game of basketball in China directly after the 2008 Olympics. He facilitated player development, conditioning and game day strategies.

He's been an assistant at Tennessee St. for 3 years.

That FIU situation is really interesting.  I'm not a big Isiah Thomas fan but the players love him.  And he has only been there 3 years.  Many thought next year was going to be a breakout season for the program, espicially with 4 of the top 50 HS recruits in Florida coming in.  And I really don't understand the administration having the police escort Thomas and his staff off campus after the meeting to fire him.  Maybe there was something going on that is not public knowledge, but if you were a coach would you want to go to a program that treats their coaches and players like that? The current players don't want to be there and the recruits are not going to show either.  What a mess!!!

PITINO  LEAVES  LOUISVILLE  TO  COACH  FLORIDA  INTERNATIONAL

Sort of.
Assistant coach Richard Pitino will leave Louisville to become the next head coach of Florida International University, replacing Isiah Thomas, according to several reports. Pitino, 29, son of coach Rick Pitino, is expected to take fellow assistant Mark Lieberman to work on his staff. This will be the younger Pitino's first head coaching job.

Interesting hire at Fla. International.   The younger Pitino has several years of assisting his father at Louisville. His Dad also sent him to Billy Donovan at Florida for a couple of years after his Dad's "fifteen seconds of fun."

Being around Human Resources, after a termination occurs it is more common than you think (for escort off the premises). It happens in bigger company with higher ups. They get escorted off by security. I bet it was campus police escort, not city or state police. I wouldn't read into that too much.

You also avoid the Billy G-Kentucky-Fake Cell Phone call fiasco. Isiah is a huge name and him being fired could have created a media circus on campus that they administration did not want to deal with. This is what I think it is, especially if they were escorting the staff off campus as well.

Could be right.  I think there is more tot eh story though.  Thomas hasn't always rubbed people the right way.  If they are hiring Patino it could help quell the noise and maybe convince some player and recruits to stay.  I think this is one of the most interesting coaching change situations this year.
